Auxiliary fuel tank need help

I am in the process of loading up my truck and boat and heading to New Orleans. My friends that are already there went with an extra 150 gal. tank of diesel. I don’t have the bucks for an extra in bed fuel tank like theirs. I have an ARE cover and would like to leave it on. Do you think 55 Gal. drums strapped down would work okay? I used 30 gal drums to haul my race fuel in the old days. I had a bunghole petcock on the drum and would leave it barely cracked to vent the drum. That was race fuel that would evaporate quickly not diesel.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks

I don't see that hauling fuel in good solid 55 gal. drums should be a problem. My concern would be making SURE that they are secure. Having said that, I don't know what the legality issues are in regards to transporting fuel in drums. I know that those transfer tanks are pricy but your life and the lives of those on the road with you are worth more than what you'd save by hauling in an unsafe manner. Any farmers or heavy equipment operators around you that might loan you a transfer tank? Just my thoughts.

Thank you for your advice Jay. I have been trying to locate a tank but haven’t found the right one yet. I have heard you must have a permit even for a transfer tank here in this state. I’m sure it would be the same in other states. A couple of the tank dealers and a fuel distributor said 55 gal drums would work but like you said be sure they are strapped securely.

as far as being legal as long as you are not over 118 gallons i believe that is the amount you not required to have placards and hazmat per the DOT. i would secure them for safety reasons and for theft good luck
