Auto tranny won't shift out of 1st, stuck at work!

For about 3 or so months now sometimes 1st gear would seem to hold a little longer than it felt it should, it would still shift into 2nd and so on as normal. If I let off the go pedal or ease up it would shift into 2nd then as well. Today it drove to work as normal (well as above anyway), and now I get ready to go home from work and it won't shift out of 1st. I've tried the pedal trick, moving the shift selector to 1st and trying to move up to 2nd, easy driving as well as hard acceleration with no change. Any words of advise to resolve, get home?

Did you check the fluid level? If its to low it wont be able to build pressure to shift.
Thats about all I can help with.
How many miles? When was the last time the tranny was serviced?

Mine did that a couple of months ago.
Scared the beejebees outta me.
Shut the truck down, and after about twenty minutes, I drove it again and it shifted OK, but it still seemed like it was shifting late.

A new speed sensor on the transmission took care of the problem.
$23 and about 15 minutes of work.

Well, I was able to get it to the dealer tonight (yes, it was a long slow drive that probably had a few people giving me the on the way). Service tech found no codes coming from the transmission, but did fine a code of either PCM 1693, or PCM 1692. I can't remember which. Transmission tech is going to look at it in the morning however and call me. If this is a speed sensor or any other "plug'n play" coming off the transmission, is this something I can handle on my own? Does anyone know what either of these codes might be? I'm pretty sure it was PCM 1693 but not 100%.

I am sure I will get bashed for this. But my old 94 wouldn't go into overdrive to save it's life. I could get up to speed but it would keep slipping out. Try a bottle or 2 of Lucas transmision stuff. It really works and will get you a few more miles out of the tranny. 100k out of a 47re is good, BUT thats about all you can get out of them. I rebuilt mine at 97k and 192k So buy a bottle of the Lucas tranny fix and start saving for a rebuild

The dealer called me back to ask for authorization to drop the pan for "exploratory surgery", apparently they were not able to diagnose the problem from the codes...

Same thing for me about a year ago. Speed sensor. Your dealer really should be changing this way before dropping the pan. A new sensor is cheape than a fluid change.

That's what I thought too. I specifically asked if he checked the speed sensor and the governor sensor, he said that they did and found no codes or failure.

th whole thing sounds fishy to me that the dealer couldn't find what it is after supposedly replacing these things and checking them...don't be shocked if they try and sell an overhaul on u...at this point start thinking of another shop...no way in hell could they not figure this out immediately...sorry im a cynical empty shell

dealer just called me back, they advise they have now found the problem and is the output speed sensor ($145.10 including all diagnosis and parts/labor)

I also asked them about replacing the 4-way flasher switch as it will not depress and make contact without holding it in the correct position (183.24)

And, I asked them about updating the flash software, ($80) (does that sound right? I thought that was free?!?)

Advise?

That same speed sensor was $23 and change at my local parts house.
It took me about 15 minutes to change it, counting the time to find the right sized socket.
Gotta love that "Diagnostic Time".
If they'd just join our website.....(it's FREE) they'd have found the solution in about 5 minutes......

Where is that speed sensor located? Heck I might try that on mine being that it is that cheap.
