I need to order an alternator for a friend. The truck is not handy to me and he is partially disabled. I understand it can be either a Bosch or Denso and they don't interchange. Any way to tell by year and model? It's a '96 3/4 Ton 4x4 automatic.

Thanks Doc, That's the web page I saw in the first place that caused me to question the differences. Rock Auto says to check notes B86, 87 and 102, whatever the heck they are. I checked the Bosch webpage and found nothing. Their application listing for Dodge diesel didn't even mention alternators. It did mention spark plug wires and glow plugs, so I don't have a lot of confidence in that list.

Someone must have ordered an alternator and had some issue with proper application.

 

Have you actually looked at the alternator in the truck??

 

I work for a rebuilding shop,and every thing I've seen on that year,was denso.
