An update:
On the 97 there are two sensors. They look completely different. One is for the AirBag, the other for the ABS system. Both of them were defective on my truck. Replaced the sensors, and all is well again.

Like others have said, It is most likely the ABS sensor on the rear axle. It does not always affect the tach. I had the same problem, the tach and speedo worked fine, but lighs on. Replaced the sensor, no problems since. Cost me $45 for the part at the dealer. Takes about 5 or 10 minutes to replace.
