93 D350 Dually tranny symptoms
Mine just started acting up COLD in the morning, not upshifting completely and then has started downshifting intermittently whenever it wants. Sporatic shift patterns from O/D to 3rd and back while cruising with no load. Is this the start of tranny troubles to come? Thanx for your replies in advance. (Hondo)

Rammer64,
My 92 W250 dually did the same thing, first every once in a while then got progressively worse. Finally it wouldn't even go into O/D at all. I took it to the tranny shop who quickly found there to be an electrical problem. They sent it to an electric "specialist" and he gave it back to them saying he fixed it. Right. Paid $tons$. Got the truck back, still no O/D. Better yet, my gauges stopped working too! Took it back. Specialist cleared codes, fiddled around some more, gave it back and said "It's fixed". Still no O/D or gauges. Figured to hell with them, I'm not spending more of my hard earned $$ to have them fool around and not fix it. Took it home, found a blown fuse that fixed the gauges. I tested and checked around all over the transmission and under the hood. Couldn't find anything suspicious so I put it back together. Next thing I knew the O/D was working like a charm! Called the Tranny shop and told 'em it was working. A few thousand miles later, same thing started again. I took it to a local fellow who hooked it to his computer and found two error codes, one said the O/D solenoid circuit was open or shorted, and the TPS sensor voltage was above limmits. We jiggled some wires and the codes disappeared, and the O/D worked like new again. So as far as I can tell, I had some loose connections. What I would suggest doing is to check all your electrical connections, make sure they're good and tight, not corroded. One thing you might also like to do is to get in your truck, turn the key to the run (do not start) position and back off 3 times in rapid succession and your check engine light will go out after about 2 or 3 seconds, then stay out for 2 or 3 seconds, then it will flash a sequence of codes. Write 'em down and consult the board. I'm not sure now what the codes all are but I can tell you that the codes I got with the same symptom were 1-2 (start of codes) 3-3 (open or short in A/C clutch circuit, I don't have A/C ???) 2-4 (Open or short O/D solenoid Circuit) 4-5 (TPS voltage outside limmits, not exactly sure what they are, I'm sure someone else will be able to tell you) 5-5 (end of codes). Hope this helps, sorry about the life story but figured I'd better tell it so some tranny shop or ******* doesn't tell you you need a new Torque converter and all kinds of other stuff like one ******* tried to tell me...

Thanx spitzair. I'll check that out but I'm kinda leaning more towards a fluid and filter change. It's fine when the trans or weather is warm when the viscosity is low. As it gets colder and the fluid thickens seems to be when the trouble starts.
It definitely seems to be temperature related. What do ya's think?

Could be your transmission temp. sensor as well... I think Yomitch had this problem not too long ago. Hopefully he'll jump in here and tell you more.

The 3-4 shift is controled by the power control module (PCM). The PCM gets input from the coolant temp sensor, transmision temp sensor, throttle position sensor (TPS), crank position sensor and the speedo. ANy of these are candidated for this problem

Mine does the same thing sometimes. It is usually slow to upshift and when it finally does it will sometimes hunt between 3-4 at around 50mph. I'm told it is probably the TPS or the tranny temp sensor. Check the wire connections at all these sensors. Clean and gease with dielectric grease and see if that helps.
