92 just stopped! electrical problem suggestions?
Hi All,
My neighbor started his 92 and got a 1/2 mile and it just stopped just like you would turn off the key! I checked out the fuses under the dash and all ok. I noticed with the key in the on/start position there is NO amp gauge reading, No wipers, No Radio, No turn signals, No temp gauge. Things that work are the buzzer, power windows and locks, A/C Blower with the key on. You would think if it was a short a fuse would have gone out but I could not find one even the one by the batt was ok I think it was the fuse link only 20 amp though? .... that's about it and suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks !!

Check the fuseable links on the driver-side inner fender. I bet the one that went feeds the circuits you mentioned plus the fuel shutoff solenoid. Try jumping the fuel solenoid to the + terminal of the battery--it should start so he can drive it home.

I checked a lead off of the battery and it had a 20 amp that was ok I too was looking for the main fuseable link couldn't seem to find it? ..... is there something in next to the fender too ... this stuff was just off the battery within a foot or so most of the connections were push on's
Thanks Ken

There's a small handful of fuseable links and they will likely be buried/taped in the harness closer to the firewall, about 3/4 the distance from the battery to the firewall, making them difficult to identify. The connectors close to the batteries are for the grid heaters, I believe.

Hi Do the links actually have some sort of a fuse in them ? or do you think they are just connectors, I only found 1 fuse by the batt in a little rubber carrier unless they are buried in the harness and I don't think that would be do you
Thanks again

A fuseable link looks just like the wire that leads to it, only a bit thicker. It's a very specific gauge wire that will allow only X amount of current before it melts. It acts like a fuse, but is harder to replace. There are 5 or 6 of them and they are bundled in the harness and not easy to see.

I had the same thing hapen to me a while back, nothing worked but the fan and linghts. it was the fusable link, it had melted in the middle, but if i wiggled the wires jusst right it would get conedction. leave the key on and start to wiggle wires and poking around with a test light until you hear stuff turn on. pull the fusable links, on mine the plastic outside was fine but the inside was gone, I found the problem when i pulled the link and the plastic just streched. The links look like stiff wires and say fusable link on them.

you might want to check the fuel shutoff solenoid as well. there are two blue wires going to the injection pump and one goes to the ksb (the longer looking unit on the lower portion of the Injection pump) and the other goes to the fuel shutoff solenoid. it is above, towards the rear of the pump. If this connection gets disconnected, it will turn the truck off , like you describe.

I had a problem like that once and found that the wiring near the ignition switch inside/under the column (right by the key) had toasted.
The good news is that a hotwire to the pump and arc-cranking the starter should start it to get it to where ever you need it for now. Love these mechanical engines.
