4wd not engaging.

99 2500 24v.

Ok, before I go out in the 20 deg weather and check vacuum lines and wire connections on the transfer case I thought I would get a little direction first.

When it snowed the other day everything was fine when I shifted into 4h, transfer case shifted fine, front locked up fine and 4wd indicator light illuminated on the instrument cluster etc. Yesterday I tried the same and the frontend did not lock up and the 4wd indicator did not illuminate. I've also noticed that the OD lockout does not work either and I had just tried the OD lockout a day or two before the snow so I know it worked recently. I'm hoping there is a vacuum line or wire connecter that is related to both these issues.

Thanks in advance!

Meandvls, check your wiring! There are two wires that can get cut when the truck bottoms out. They are located on the passengers side of your front axle. Your swith is located here. The wires run upwards and can get cut quite easily by your suspension. Check it out.

Well, the connection on the front passenger axle is good and the wire running up is intact........
Vacuum lines on transfer case appear connected too.

Ok, found the problem.....I had a hole in a vacuum line. Now...my 4wd indicator light stays on...the light came back on while I was checking fuses and connections -before I found the leak- and now it won't go out when I'm in 2wd. Also, my OD lockout still doesn't work. I push the button on the gear selector (auto tranny) and it does'nt lockout and illuminate the OD off light...

Make sure you check those CHEAP plastic linkage parts. They are small and round and connect the shifter to a rod that goes to the transfers case. their are 2 of them on the rod. One by the case and one at the bottom of the shifter. One other thing to check is the shifter itself. The spring on mine loosen up to the point where it wouldn't stay in gear. One snow storm I had to prop the handle up so it would stay in place and I could stay in 4wd

Ok, signature updated..
After doing a temp fix on the vacuum lines 4wd engages and works fine, now the 4wd indicator light in the instrument cluster stays lit when in 2wd and pushing the button for "OD off" does nothing.

You could have a bad switch, or the CAD is not actually disengaging, or bad wiring. If you disconnect the plug for the switch and the light does not go out, it is a wiring problem. If it does go out, then the switch is bad or it is being pressed. Take the switch out and read the resistance of it with a Multimeter. When not pressed, you should read very high resistance, essencially nothing. When pressed it should be a short, close to zero ohms. If the switch is good, check to see if the CAD is actually disconnecting. Easy way, jack up the passenger front tire and try to rotate it. If you can rotate it easliy, the CAD is not engaged.

Ok, received the new vacuum lines from the dealer and installed. When I shift the transfercase to 4h it goes in 4x and the front lock etc....when I shift the transfercase back to 2h it goes back to 2wd but it takes sometimes 5-10 mins before the 4x4 dash light goes out and the CAD fully disengages. Could this be because of the near or below freezing temps currently or?

Also, as I mentioned before, when I push the OD off button at the end of my shifter nothing happens..any ideas of where to start?

thanks

I have a 2005, this is the first real snow it's been in. the antilock brakes are on same as the 4x4 in the dash, but the pick-up just wants to go around in circles. it seems like the front pads are grabbing and olny the back axle is pulling.
