Question 2006 Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel 4x4 Oil comming out of exhaust

I was stopped at a light, I went to accelerate and a loud sound like air coming out of a tire very fast and very loud erupted. right after that the truck would only get up to 15 MPH. I then saw a huge cloud of smoke come out from the back of my truck. Mind you with 170,000 miles i was surprised.
I got the truck towed to a mechanic and he told me the motor blew. I called a dealership and they want $700.00 up front just to tear it down and diagnose it. I made some calls and researched on line and have found that in some cases The Turbo blew out, this makes sense it has the same symptoms.

Please help me with your ideas.

Thank you all in advance

Texas Pete

I would pull the hose that goes to the intercooler and check if any oil is there. If there is oil then the turbo needs to be replaced and the intercooler cleaned out since it is filled with oil now. I would use a detergent like cascade with water only. Donot use anything flamable since it could be drawn into engine and cause engine damage or diesel runaway.

That diag amount seems pretty high. Unless you have a dead cylinder with low compression a tear down isn't needed. A starscan that dealers use can locate problem and pull any codes much faster. I usually charge one hour to diag. If compression test is needed usually charge a little more. A turbo failure can be checked in less then one hour. Replacing turbo and cleaning intercooler could be expensive.

Intercooler

BigIron Thank you!!!

I will check it out, the inter cooler will have to be taken off of the truck and cleaned out this way correct, it can not be flushed will mounted right? Also the air filter oil would have gotten inside right?

Thanks so much

The seal on the exhaust side could have blown out also may have to pull down pipe on turbo.

Remove intercooler to properly clean out if oil is present from turbo.

That was my first thought. Seems to me if the turbo seal in the front failed the oil would burn with the diesel and not come out of the tailpipe.

K.i.s.s.

Um.... this sounds just like when I had an intercooler boot split. Deep Poomp! and whoosh, lots of smoke, and no power. I have gauges, so it was easy to see NO boost, and very high EGTs. Idle seemed completely normal. I pulled the hose from the air cleaner to the turbo, checked that there wasn't a bunch of slop in the turbo, spun it with my finger etc.. All looked fine, then I looked down and saw the blow-out in the intercooler boot. One new boot, cheap fix.

My bearings blew out on my turbo due to oil dilution from a leaking injector. Check your oil level and see if it is above nominal. When the turbo bearings fail it is very loud and sounds like a steering pump whine on steroids. 1st the turbo sound drops in frequency from a whistle to a whine, and then a growl. At this point you will have very little power. Smoke will billow out of the exhaust if you press the accelerator. Replacing one injector and a turbo cost about $3300.00.
