12valve retrofit to 454 motorhome

heard a 12valve was pretty simiple to instal because the motor is mechanical. bought a 97 12valve and pulled the motor Saterday. The only thing simple about it was unpluging the connectors to pull the engine. Any one know what wires are really needed to make the engine run?

Aside from the normal starter and alternator wiring, you really need only one electrical connection. The fuel solenoid needs to have power to lift and hold. I would replace the electrical solenoid with a throttle cable from a tractor supply company.
I think the real reason for an electrical shut off is for safety to prevent unwanted starts.
george

Thanks for the reply
Looking at the motor a little closer It looks like it has a crank position sensor. What is affected if I don't wire that in?
Also up on the intake there are several more wires, I'd heard the cummins has a heated air intake. ? I'm guessing that is what those are.?

On the '97, I think that what you are seeing as a crank position sender is the tack...a little sensor on the left hand side of the vibration damper. For the grid heaters, you will need the relays and sensors on the intake. The relays are on the driver's side fender cowl of the donor truck.
george

Depending on where you are and where you plan to camp, it may not be worth your time to go through all the wiring and stuff for the grid heaters. I've started my 89 and my 95 in all kinds of weather before they even cycled off.
Smokey hit it right as far as wiring though. The solenoid went bad on my 89 and I used a mechanical shut down for it. Just went in and took the plunger out and put the switch back in.
