Sorry to be repetitive, but it sure sounds like timing, especially with the difference n the squirt pattern. Sorry to keep beating a dead horse.

I thought it was timming as well. Its not a different squirt pattern, its just #1 is weak, i think it is getting air from the delivery valve. i have to find a new o-ring for it, cummins didn't have it. all other injectors squirt nice, but #1 is real weak and has air bubbles, so i'm off o-ring hunting.

gentlemen, i'm am sorry, it did jump time. it is moving .100". i am using a standard dial indicator, not a metric one. in my agrivated state i was not noticing that the guage was not going around twice. I needed to be at .192 and i was only at .092. dumb mistake. thank you for all of your input, and i am sorry.

Like stated earlier, you have to make sure that shaft is super clean. Gear as well. Use lots of brake cleaner on them and a new washer.

I noticed when I did mine, that oily residue would run down the gear into the area I was trying to clean (where the taper on the gear and the shaft meet). So the fix is to clean the the oil off the gear first. Lots of brake clean, let it air dry. Using compressed air has a chance of blowing more oil into the taper. When the gear is "busted loose" move it around and wobble it (rock it) while spraying brake clean to get cleaner in every possible spot on the taper. Then clean the tapered area again, let air dry, push gear back onto shaft, align and tighten.

What are you torqueing the nut to? I know there are two different torque specs floating around, only one is correct. Cummins did increase the torque value from the original specs, I THINK 160 ft lbs? Can look up the correct value for you, but, hopefully others will have that value for you.

Good thing it was timing, I was beginning to think head gasket. Especially after you said a couple of times "timing is good".

I've heard several storys like this when folks use a dial indicator with a magnetic base instead of the screw in adaptor and things are more adapt to move around.
I go as far not to use brake cleaner because it leaves residues and use electronic cleaner instead.
I'm super clean about it since once during a pump swap I marked the gear with chalk to line it up in the same place again. Even clean with the proper torque the timing slipped right away, I'm sure it was due to the chalk.

i was torqueing to 144#. is it supposed to be 160? i did it last night and it moved again, so today i will do it again and make sure it is spotless. i may even take the front cover back off. I have the dial indicator holder, i just wasn't paying attetion to the fact that the dial only went around once. i was looking for TDC, then look at indicator. My mistake. That thing will be clean, dry, and ready this time. this is rediculous. anyone ever put loc tite on the shaft? thanks again.

I go to 160 ft/lbs
Loctite on the shaft will make it even more prone to slip.
You want clean metal to metal contact for the best grip.
