Hard to explain noise…ideas please (5.9)

Here are a few descriptions:

a) The sound is an intermittent “run run run”, just like the engine sound if you accelerate a little say from 1700 rpms to 1800 rpms, I wish I could described it better L

b) I don’t know if the noise is there at a lower RPM but once it hits 60 mph or above 1800 rpms the “run” begin within a half of a second intervals.

c) During the noise intervals the power does not change.

d) If I put it on cruise at 65 mph the “broom broom” is so noticeable you will think I am pushing the accelerator pedal every half of a second. Sort of like when at a light stop you follow the “beat” of the music with the brake or the go pedal. Again, the power does not change nor the truck jerks.

Thanks for the help!

Maybe you have an injector that's gone nuts and is opening more than it should. It may be just enough so you hear the engine sound change but not enough that it affects the running of the truck.

That's a wierd one Eddie...

You may want to get this switched to the correct forum for better results. This forum is for the 6.7s......

Thanks again Dodgezilla, not to cofuse anyone this is a trasplant thread from the 6.7 side.

Does it sound like a vibration? Driveline not balanced, maybe?

Sounds like what I had, a resonance only when I get to 60mph with a slight vibration in the wheel very faint and very light. Come to find out today my right front bearing is shot and will be replaced tomorrow.

But I don't know if you're talking of a resonance noise or engine noise.

You guys mentioned resonance, vibration, out of balance.
I am beginning to tilt about any of those being the issue as when the sound appears the engine power or acceleration does not change.

In any case I am going to take a friend Diesel Mechanic for a ride tomorrow see if he can diagnose the problem, will keep you posted.

Thanks.

I had a Ford Bronco that made a groaning noise under slight loads only but I always felt the xmission was the cause.

Could be a tire noise have your tires rotated and see if noise goes away.

I had a noise somewhat like you are describing. Mine sounded like a wheel was out of balance. Got worse as the weeks went by! Finally I pulled the wheel and caliper so I could rotate hub by hand. It was immediately obvious that the bearings were shot! Replaced both hubs and truck was much quieter!

Suggest you get yours up to speed where noise appears, then put tranny in neutral (let engine idle) and see if noise goes away. If not, I would say noise is either driveline or wheel/hub related.

Couldn't U-joints as well as wheel bearings cause this same condition?

When I had a u-joint start to go it was more of a squeak at certain rpm's.

Yes but Ujoints show their ugly side on take off more than while driving. If you are towing heavy and you are feeling an extreme vibration upon takeoff its likely ujoints. Bearings usually show their signs when getting up to speeds, usually the speeds you cruise most.
