I went to my bros for the weekend. I like to give him a hand around his place because he is pretty broken up after his cycle wreck. He has a late 80's mercedes diesel that the water pump went out on. We began the tear down and discovered that the fan clutch is bolted to the pump hub and the allen bolt was stripped out. We tried a bolt extractor with no luck. Since the fan and the pulley must come off we were in a bind. We didn't want to lose all the r12 out of the a/c system by removing the condenser, and we couldn't drill or grind the bolt with it in place. Soooo out came the cordless sawzall! I tried to cut thru the pump body but the race in the cone was so hard it stripped off all the teeth on the blade! That was some hard steel! With few options left we chipped the pump body apart piece by piece with a cold chisle. Thank god we didn't break the housing on the engine block, what a mess that would be. We chipped enough out to remove the shaft and impeller assembly and unbolted the remaining pieces. Man what a job!

 

Now go change the water pump on your Cummins....should take about 8 minutes start to finish if you stop to pound a beer at 4 minutes
