Why You Drive A Diesel?
#48
Why? Because of great fuel Mileage, Toughness, Safety (heavier vehicle in a wreck) Reliability, Very LONG life, and NO SPARK IGNITION to interfere with my Ham Radio... The last one is the one I'll tell for the persistantly negative folks that are truly clueless about diesels... Funny, they'll accept that, but will still cluck their tongues about all the other reasons... Oh well...
You all understand.... That's why we're in this support group!
I could've added "ecology", but I got weary of arguing with diesel-unenlightened tree huggers(don't bother).
I first wanted my own Ram CTD after test driving my Bro-in-law's '89 CTD and felt that turbo spool up for the first time...

Sounds like we're all on the same boat... I feel like a hipocrit sometimes. I bet to some people it sounds like I'm imitating a soccer mom driving a H2... But I just like the diesel soo much! The power, rumble, noise, etc. And also the fact that it gets reasonably good gas mileage for it's size. I've always wanted a truck this size and never considered the gassers because of the crappy fuel mileage.

Just weird, I am. Got 1..2.3..4...5..6...7.....8 machines currently running diesel.

I own mine because its what I wanted and I can afford it. I've always loved the 2nd gen body (my 2nd, 2nd gen) and I love diesels hence why I'm a diesel mechanic for the railroad. I also like the fuel mileage, the diesel versatility of the truck and the reliability.

Living and working all around the Rocky Mountains, I am constantly in rolling hills(some of them hills is over 14,000'!) I do about 40,000 miles a year and have worn out many a gasser in the last 30 years. The gassers were constanly shifting and screaming their guts out to get me over even the smallest rise. It used to drive me crazy going from Cheyenne to Salt Lake as the trannys were almost in a continuous fight to keep the engine in a torque zone that worked.
My first trip, I was sold forever on the Cummins diesel. I do not know of a highway situation here in the Rockies where the grade will cause me to take it out of 6th gear. I call my nv5600 an automatic at any speed above 45mph. Just feed it a little throttle and away we go.
I get to drive a truck with incredible power.
I get the mileage of a midsize car, but I can haul, tow anything I want.
I can sleep in the back at the shooting matches.
At 100k+ the pickup is still worth close to 80% of what I paid for it!
I expect 400k+ out of it as a feasible service life.
If I write off mileage, I may actually come out on this vehicle tax wise.
It is simple to work on.
I can get rid of my fish fry and waste oil with it.
But the best reason is:
My daughters friends say they are scared of me when I come roaring up behind the dormitory in 1st gear!!

18 gallons of diesel= $55
Fuel additive=$6
Look on a Ford, Chevy, or Dodge owner when i blow black smoke off the line and its a CTD under the hood=Priceless
Even though my truck looks like a pos i wouldnt have it any other way. my ex used to tell me i should sell it cuz it kept eating ujoints and the stuff the previous owner cobble f'ed kept breaking. i just told her that the truck will be around longer than she will hence the ex part. i know my truck wont beat everyone else but it is what i want and with the whole radio thing. i lost my radio do to a wiring problem for a month or so and i didnt even miss it. just hte purr of the engine made me content. plus the sound of an ag CTD starting on a cold day is awesome. especially when youre sitting next to another diesel that starts at the same time and it rocks my whole truck. plus all the other reason yall have put up too. i will never own another gasser unless its a muscle car.

I first had a 97 gasser dodge, and trust me, I loved that little fast thing. Then, my stepdad bought the 03 that I own now. He allowed me to drive it one time, and I fell instantly in love with it. I drove it to my senior prom, cleaned it up and everything that day, and darn, it looked nice.
I bought it back in January, I'm in college so it is hard to afford, but you pay to play. I'm glad I bought it, it will last much, much longer than my gasser would have. AND, the resale value on these diesels are high, so if I ever want to sell it to buy a 12v, I might be able to make a little bit of money on it(got it way under book value).
