Why You Drive A Diesel?

Why is it when someone finds out i drive a diesel they ask what are you pulling and do you really need it? I would just like to have a good answer for them. If you tell them you pull a John Deere lawn mower or a 4-wheeler they laugh, what up with that?

There's still a LOT of perception that diesel is ONLY for towing and is VERY SLOW

Both our vehicles are diesel...the wife's jetta and my dually. The 3rd best move i ever made (family, house, goin' diesel)!

It's flat out amazing how ignorant the general public is! Every once in a while I'll be fueling the jetta & people are astounded over the fact that it IS a diesel! Then just watch their jaw bounce when they hear how hi the mileage is and can be!

Back to your point...Yes, I get the same questions about my dually....friends at work (giving me crap) kept asking if I was compensating ! So, I explain that with the boat and flatbed trailer, I do have the need for weight capacity. And, in about 2 years we'll be buying a slide in camper to go camp & fish! (I am getting tired of tenting it!)

Most think the extra $4000-5000 needs to be justified somehow.

Safety when pulling a large load. I could drive a smaller V6 import that has the same mileage as my 3/4ton diesel but can't safely tow my Jeep over the mountains. 3/4ton has better brakes, suspension, frame, tires and engine over any 1/2ton and smaller. The diesel nets the same mileage as an import and way better than a big block with power to spare.

'Cuz when all the gasoline is used up, and they're sitting in their $70,000 Beemer in their driveway making Vroom-Vroom noises pretending they're driving somewhere, I'll still be tooling down the road my diesel running on Motor oil, Veggie, oil, Coal oil, or whatever else I can find that will flow through the fuel pump.

I drive mine because it's my dream truck since high school. I have always wanted one but could never afford it until now. I was always envoius of the older people who had one and now people envy me since I'm the older guy with the cool diesel. Not to mention that it pulls my TT without effort and still gets good mileage.

Unfortunately I've parked the truck for my daily driver purposes and am driving my nerdy Mazda b2600 truck. My kids have named the Mazda "Pappy" cause they say it definately looks like an old mans truck. Oh well.

2 reasons:
1) I MIGHT have to overhaul at 500,000
2) I love the rattle!

Well, I'm a non-conformist!

I don't like sparkplugs, points, coils, SP wires and all that's required to fire off a gas engine.

I like the power and torque a diesel engine delivers. I tell the ignorant and the wise, "I've got a 13 HP diesel Kubota tractor that will pull your 20HP lawn mower around the section backwards when hooked back to back on less then a coffee cup of fuel!"

Just weird, I am. Got 1..2.3..4...5..6...7.....8 machines currently running diesel.
