All vehicles 1974 and older are exempt from the biennial smog requirements.

CA is a pretty good state. You guys have to remember that it is the most populated state in the US, that's why we have so many smog regulations. Otherwise, the pollution would be 5x worse than it is now (which is already pretty bad in Los Angeles and Kern County). I can see a difference in the amount of pollution now than 10 years ago. The other day I was driving down the 405 and the sky in the distance was literally "more brown" than it was 10 years ago. I complain about all the laws we have, but then again there's nothing I can do about it so I might as well be happy with why we have them. I'm glad Arnold came along. Gray Davis had tripled all vehicle registration fees right before he left!

And here I thought $80.00 a year I pay here in IA was bad, that is after living in Oregon where I only paid $155.00 every for 4 years for plates on my 2005 Dodge 1500 4x4. I don't see how can you all afford to live there and pay the high prices you do for every thing?

Car registration is NOTHING compared to real estate here. 500K for an average house and property tax is at least 5K. The older I get the more often I wonder exacyly why do I live here? 3% unemployment, and rediculously good weather are tough to beat.....It is strange to hear people from the other states talking about how tough it is to find a good job. Here, if you have a pulse, you are hired!

well try this on for size........ 1200sf TOWN HOME, no yard, one car garage that barely fits washer & dryer, my tool box, 2 quads, 1 mtn bike and 1 beach cruiser..................300K. property tax came in at $4500......

Property taxes.
With all these resales bringing on alltime high revenues for our cities,you've gotta wonder where it's all going? I've still got overhead utilities,the streets are in bad shape(streets here in San Diego were routinely repaved when I was younger),and good luck finding a peace officer when you need one. Thank God for Howard Jarvis and Prop. 13 or it'd be worse. The weather is killer here though.

Don't know if it's still that way but NY used to ban pickups from the parkways. Something like CA with commercial plate issues. back in the early 80s I was stationed on GI and going out w/ a LI girl. I borrowed a Chevy Snow Commander from a Maine-iac buddy and was stopped twice in 50 miles the first cop didn't look at the non commercial Maine plates until after he stopped me and the second just wanted to remind me to stay in the left lane so I didn't top out the stone bridges
Now I'm married to her and I love taking the dodge down the southern state when I visit the outlaws (I don't get stopped now, dunno why) I use it as an attitude adjustment tool for the New Jerkians that think 1 car length between cars means they can get in there

Don't confuse CA's pickup registration with a true commercial vehicle registration. They aren't the same and don't follow the same rules.
As for real estate...We all should have moved out of this state a year ago while real estate was still booming. I could have sold my house that I just bought 3 years ago for twice what I paid for it, bought a larger house on a lot 10 time the size in almost any other state and ended up with no mortgage! Of course I would only be able to find a job that paid 1/4 of what I'm making now.

Amen PT, That's why we're looking at Taylorsville, KY.
3500 SF, 2 acres, 4-5 bedroom and we wouldn't have a mortgage due to your same situation. I want to get the 02 paid off first though (July 08). Speaking of which, how stupid was I (02 purchased on July 5th and 06 purchased on July 17th) Probably close to 900-1000 in registration that month not including Daughters B-days (06/30 and 07/17).
