General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Who gets a camper shell for DMV, then takes it off?

Registration or plates themselves?

06 Registration was $531.00 IIRC?

02 is still over $400.00.

93 Mustang $58.00

Does this commercial plate thing apply to ALL trucks or just 3/4 ton and up?

One more reason to only VISIT California.

What you might want to check into since you have a '96:
Most states have a "kept secret" permanent registration for vehicles over ten years old. Sometimes you have to be very persistent to find out about it, even some of the DMV people don't know about it.

When my rigs turned ten I went permanent, cost about twice as much as one year. Stick on tabs now say EXEMPT, paperwork is the last I will ever get.

I talked about this several years ago on TDR, many people who had never known found that their different states offer it, they just keep it hidden.

CA does not have anything of the sort. You must smog all gas vehicles every year, some are every other year. And the smogs are done on a dyno. If you could pay permanent registration on a vehicle here in CA it would cost you your first born child!

yeah they got it bad out there.i hear that to help pay for all the smog checks etc to make the air cleaner they are gonna start taxing them for the air they breath.gonna set up the dmv with breath anylizers to measure the volume of air you breath per minute then multipy by minutes in a year.gonna get you when you come in to register your cars.and to make sure you comply they are gonna have little stickers to put on your forehead so they know you paid.just kidding.but i wouldn't put it past em.my girlfriend lived out there for about 20 years and some of the stupid laws she's told me about make me cringe.

Here's the smog kicker...

They have switched to a dyno oriented smog, my Mustang passed the older style, but failed the dyno version.

No pretest on the new Dyno smog.

$80.00-100.00 for dyno smog.

My mustang and its failure.

Smog test $95.00 (Failed)
Diagnosis from separate shop $200.00 (ineffecient Catalytic)
Catalytic $800.00 installed (Foxbodies had 4 Cats, switched to 2 Larger highflow *CA Approved*)
Smog retest $95.00

Total $1190.00

Sunshine taxes.

My new '07 was $461.00 based on a weight of 6600#(reg.cab.). My old '99 was $303.00 based on 6281#. Weight plays a huge role. Under Gov. Davis the dem. registrations were 30% higher. Ahnold came in a reduced it 30%. One good thing I can say about the guy. By the way,my gas&light bill was $84.00 last month. Things have a way of evening out some times.

Wow........never gonna listen to anyone talk about how wonderfull California is again...

Here in KS, Commercial vehicles are just that, owned and operate by a bussiness for the purpose of generating income. Basicaly, if it doesnt require a DOT number, it doesnt need a commercial tag.

I cant recall ever seeing a commercial tag on a p/u here, even fleet vehicles dont use them.

My registration fees drop if I put a flat-bed on it.......Dedicated farm trucks and such have a special rate for registration that is cheaper than pass. vehicles.......

I wish...Last month was $128.89 Gas and $189.06 Electric, this was a semi good month, I average $350.00 in winter and $300.00 in summer. Keep in mind I go through a half cord of wood each winter too and all my lights are compact fluorescents and I have a front load washer.

You must not be on PG&E or Sandy Eggo is an extremely better winter climate than SF.

Not true. You can own a flatbed/service bed truck and not be required to go through the scales as long as the GVW is under 15,000 lbs. Now if its a moving van or small delivery van with a GVW under 15,000 lbs, you must stop at the scales. It's a Homeland Security thing. Now the BIT program is not quarterly. It's every 2 years for inspections. It stands for Biennal Insepection of Terminals. AND you only need to regester for BIT when your vehicle is used commerically or to haul passengers commercially. Limos, school busses/vans, chruch busses/vans and carpool vans all fall into ths catagory. Large family's with large vans don't. Motor homes don't, ect.
