During the night I do my best to keep my exhaust note as quiet as I can, especially since I live in an apartment where the sound can bounce off anything and everything. What really ticks me off is people that don't do that during the overnight hours, especially the jerk that has a LOUD harley which he stores in a garage directly across from my unit. One night around 1 am he was showing it off to some "lady" and revving it. I was in the process of putting some pants and a shirt on to go out and give him my own earful of expletives about his disrespect for his neighbors but before I could go out the door he and the chick had gotten into their car and driven off. He's also come home in the late hours of the night and sat and revved it repeatedly while he waits for the garage door to open. He doesn't do it very often, but we moved in late last year when it was getting cold and he has rarely ridden it. Now that warm weather is coming, and I have a little boy that wakes up to sudden loud noises I'll be waiting for him.

Hurling eggs at the guy might deter him. Plus it is fun

I live in CA where Diesels don't require smog checks, and a while back on my old pump I had cranked I was blowing smoke everywhere, lots of it, and I got a letter in the mail that announced someone reported my vehicle emitting excess "emissions". It asked me to fill it out completely and list the reason/repair that was necessary to get my vehicle working correctly. I didn't send it in. It wasn't mandatory.
On another note, I heard on the radio that there is a study that people living in oakland all have a high risk of cancer because of inhalation of "diesel soot" from all the big rigs, trains and tankers nearby. Seriously that is the only problem with the black smoke, it damages the human lung if inhaled. The black stuff that freaks everyone else out is heavier than air and falls to the ground where you walk on it. It doesn't add to global warming, and Diesels emit far less greenhouse gasses and nox emissions than petrol vehicles. I always tell my tree hugger friends that my carbon footprint is smaller on my '89 cummins than their priuses et al...

None of my Cummins powered Rams smoked. Maybe a slight haze after idling around town all day and then hopping on the interstate but none other than that. There's no reason for it other than inflating one's ego on an Austin Powers fantasy trip. Heck, even the fascist regime we have ruining the country now is starting to see the value in clean air.

I grew up by the Burlington Northern railroad 18 miles outside of Chicago. Those old diesel locomotives would SMOKE! Noone thought anything about it. Soot is soot. Too much of anything is bad for you. Just be smart and respectful of how you present yourself and vehicle to others.

I'm not a smoke fan but that's me, so I roll into the pedal when I want to get going quick to keep the puffs from coming out the pipe.

I don't care if other trucks smoke. Better than depleted uranium flying at me!

We're turning into a nanny state.

What about folks who work the night shift and have to listen to your truck and others during the day when they're trying to sleep? You know, law enforcement, firefighters and EMT's who might have to come to your sleeping son's rescue at 02:00? Folks working the night shift just trying to make a living? Considerate means others too. Not just yourself.
i had a friend years ago who was all too considerate of himself, his wife and daughter. About 270 lbs, tattoos, old Harley tough as a pit bull and loved to fight with bare fists, knives, bats, crow-bars or what ever. And was happy go lucky about it. Broken nose, scares and all... His wife called me one morning about 16 years ago to say he was dead. A group of thugs that he'd bullied once to often beat him to death outside a biker bar in town with baseball bats. Hate to say it but he had it coming. Live by the sword, die by the sword. A guy that left me for dead in a parking lot 29 years ago is still in prison and his brother is still dead. I tend to let LE take care of inconsiderate people anymore.

this is quite disheartning, back when fuel was in the low 3's, i loved to drive through town, just romping on it, I mean the ricer's do it, street bikes, harlys, why not a 7k work truck?I see the need for some people to drive prius's , not me, ever, but with the nose in the air attitude is when its bad. hence a litle low rpm blast. Ive been to 3rd world countrys with REAL pollution problems, where everything is a 20-30 year old diesel, maybe if we are so worried we can just print some more money in the magical FED and regulate,er, help them out to. its a race to the bottom boys.

No.. not really.

I got pulled over about a month ago in my Jeep for no mud flaps.

I told the officer that I had a set at home and had taken them off a while back to go offroading. I don't usually drive the Jeep on the roads, but my truck that I normally drive was down and I needed to get to work. I knew I needed them though, didn't have time to put them on type deal. (all the truth)

He let me off with a verbal warning.

Or that you had no clue it was blowing smoke.
As for being loud... oh well.

Of course I don't go driving through the neighborhood with the truck WOT or anything like that either. I don't get waken up by the fire alarm, think a loud truck would? haha

Yeah, and? I keep my truck as quiet as I can when I'm in a neighborhood anytime of the day. If you work the night shift and sleep during the day, you should expect more of a noisy environment outside of your windows as most of the rest of the world is up and moving around from sunup to sundown. When I take a nap during the afternoon and people arriving home from work slam their car doors or make other noise outside my windows I don't get all bent out of shape at them......it's daytime, I expect things like that.....but not in the middle of the night.

Very true!

The only thing that used to annoy me was my neighbor cutting the grass at my house during the day. I worked the 11pm-7aM shift and I would leave the window open a bit to get fresh air.

I had asked if she could just do her yard instead, not that I didn't appreciate it, but that it was waking me up. She didn't listen... dunno.

When I am working on stuff making alot of noise, I shut down at 10PM unless I HAVE to have it done for the next day... I have been yelled at before work working on stuff at like 8AM on a weekend. Tough luck there. It's time to get your lazy *** out of bed anyhow!

Maybe she thought to herself, "tough luck there, it's time to get your lazy *** out of bed anyhow"!

I feel you there. I have a garage in my apartment complex. It is detached and I often work in it throughout the week, cutting wood or fabbing something up. Even on the days when it's nice and I can have the door open I will put it down if I am running my saw or grinder, or other noisy tool. I know someone might have their windows open and be annoyed at the racket I'm making. One can say "well it's a free country" yes, it is......but when what you're doing has a negative affect on other people you have to make a sacrifice, IMO.

It's really just this simple: your rights end where someone else's begin.

Yet, even that simple thing is amazingly complex.
