What oil are you guys using?
Just picked up my 2004 Ram quad 24 valve Cummins 48RE last Monday. The dealer will give me my first oil change free. After that however, what oil should I use? A lot of my friends usr Rotella T and change every 3000-5000 miles, while I have one co-worker using Mobil 1 synthetic and changing every 20000 miles. What are you guys using and doing.

Rotella- Changing every 4,000 because I am slightly **** when it comes to periodic maintenance . Rotella is currently $6.27 per gallon @ Wally World. Good stuff for dino...-Steve

Do a search on oil. : You will read for hours and hours. Welcome to the site. Tons of info here. Since you don't really ever hear of lube failure in Cummins 5.9 engines anything that is marked for this engine will work. Your choice of oil filter should be more important than the oil.

Re:What oil are you guys using?
I've used Rotella and Mobil Delvac 1300, and am now on my first fill of Amsoil.
Not sure Mobil 1 is rated for use in our engines, But I do use M1 in my Mustang. Mobil Delvac 1 is rated for our engines.
See the other thread on intervals.

I use the same oil as Alpine Ram. You can buy the oil at Cummins for about $8 and some change per gallon and buy your filters theretoo. That way you will know that they are Cummins approved!!!

From what I understand, I would be more concerned about the filter rathern than the oil (assuming the oil is the correct rating)

Yep, filter failures are a big concern. It's important that the oil fulfills all the ratings, not just viscosity- lots of broken engines from that over here. "But it was a 10W-30"- Sorry wrong API spec...

My dad and I both use rotella-t. As far as how often do we change it? depends on our driving habbits. I drive 1 mile to work each day. really really really bad on the engine so ever 2000 miles. he drives about 97miles to work each day so about 5000-7000 for him.
