Well, since you're from Tonopah I searched around and I think it's a '37 with a 216 straight 6!! I'll take a guess on the back at some sort of a 2 stage air compressor. Now that you posted those pictures on the net, all them crazy hotrodders will head out in the desert lookin' to buy it !!

I saw this truck and wondered what kind of power was under the hood.
Just curious is all.

I'm only a guessing --but -- It looks like you were at a old mine working area? Copper mine probably----being there. The truck looks to be a Air truck used for starting BIG haul trucks and also for general use, where ever they needed a big air compressor for drills an such. The compressor engine could be a Walkashaw - a continintal or ????? they used allmost anything back then . I remember seeing a v 12 packard conversion once , so unless we could see some closeup shots of the engine in question. long story short I don't know.

Think he's right on the 216, the 235 did not come in until later and the 230 much later. Does seem like they had a 194 or a 196, something like that in some of the early models. I know that a bunch of the war 40's trucks had 216.

I wonder if the unit in back is a LeRoi(Leroy)? The military had
a bunch years ago. They were a V type engine with some of the cylinders converted over as an air compressor. Haven't seen any in years.

Bruce

I saw aTV program about a flying nuclear reactor that was tested in Tonopah in the 60's. Part of that testing included forcing mass amounts of forced air through the thing. I sure there were air compressors lying around all over the desert after they were finished. The air tank used was something on the order of 2 square miles.

On the back, I agree with duelin. It looks like a two-stage air compressor {I-R maybe} (note the reciever tanks behind the cab), driven by what looks to be a gasoline F-1197 Waukesha (back then called a WAK).
