What To Buy A 5.9 Or A 6.7
I am new to the forum but will be purchasing a new dodge truck this week. 07 2500 mega cab 4x4, My local dealer has found a couple with either the 5.9 or the 6.7 but i have heard the 6.7 have a lot of problems. I was talking to a guy with a 06 5.9 and he loves it and hasn't had any problems and gets about 18 mpg. My current quad cab 04 2500 4x4 has the hemi but doesnt get all that great of mileage but the new ones have lifetime powertrain warranty. any input would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't heard of the 6.7 having a lot of problems? Other than getting slightly lower mileage than the 5.9 and having all sorts of extra emissions junk on them, they are still going to be a great motor. Cummins doesn't roll junk through their assembly lines. If modifying is something you plan on, get the 5.9 as things are more readily available for them currently...if staying stock is what you want, scoop up a 6.7 with that new 6spd...I have driven one and I will be honest, that new 6spd auto is much better than my 48RE is...wish it was on option with the 5.9 Either way...BOTH are great trucks

I have to say I'm pretty surprised to see this quote from someone with as many posts as you. I read about 6.7 problem several times a day on here.
Granted a lot (most) are emissions related but that doesn't change the frequent down time and dealer visits these guys seem to need on their 6.7's.
Hopefully they'll get it ironed out within a few model years but if I were given the choice I'd go with a 5.9 hands down from what I read on here.
Just my $0.02 though.

i vote 5.9. unless you have boocoos of money then the 6.7. you could be one of the first to find out how to delete all the emissions stuff. if there is no replacement for displacement, then a hot 6.7 should be BAD. there have been talks of someone here figuring out how to override the regeneration. i am sure we will see it soon.

I'd consider the 6.7, but not in the first year of production.
I had a choice in July of 02 whether to buy a last-batch 2002, or a brand-new HPCR.
I bought the 02. Yes, I'd prefer to have a HPCR truck, but my 02 has been good. The cost difference at the time was substantial (lotsa incentives on leftover 2002s). I knew the HPCR was superior technology, but I also knew that I didn't want to be the guinea pig. As great as teh HPCR trucks are, they had birthing problems with injectors, and such. I've had no such problems with my 2002-- just good old VP44 and such issues.
The only real regret I have with my 2002 is that you can't get the coolest suspension parts for a 2002 like you can for a 2003. Carli and Kore don't make the super trick pieces for the 2nd gens.
Oh well, my truck is practically paid for, and that's the best quality ANY truck can have!!

get the 6.7l, make sure all the TSB's and Flashes are done and enjoy it! The first run of them was doing bad with the emissions equipment but the 08's and late 07's with updated software seem to be doing great

I'll say it simple; $995 additional for the Bluetec emissions package, which will lower your HC, Nox output but also increase your fuel consumption, not fully proven, higher operating temps creating lower engine life, all for an additional cost. If modifying is someting you want to do, you now face prosecution as it's a federal offense. Just a few factors to consider, there was a recent thread posted about the '06 & '07 5.9's being the next wave of "12-valves." But they are using a great new automatic, and chances are good you'll not have too many problems overall.
