General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Warm Up Time.

I don't wanna live where you are. Besides, you'll have to move soon, that ice berg you're living on is bound to be melting.

Well you are wasting one heck of a lot of fuel by it idling for so long. Does your truck idle at or above 1,000 RPM for the whole 30 minutes of warm up? If not then you could wet stack your engine and that is very hard on it. Also the trans does not pump fluid to the torque convert in Park so that is hard on the torque converter, but being its -30 below zero it may not hurt it to much.

Do you use winter weight 10w30 or 5w40 oil in your truck, as 15w40 should not be use below zero degrees? I’ve been told by several mechanics to never use 15w40 below 10 above zero as it is hard on the bearing unless it is plugged in when not in use. If you have a winter front, use winter weight oil, and have had your truck plugged in for at least 4 hours then you only need about three minutes of idle time and then it should be good to drive, just don't mash the go pedal hard until it warms up to full operating temp.

Chainsaw.... There are probably as many opinions for this subject as there are for which is the best truck manufacturer!!.. In the end, its your truck and do what feels comforatable for you. Personally, I let the oil pressure stabilize for about a minute, then I ease out the driveway, down to the corner, and onto the highway where its a 60mph zone. If Ive got a trailer tied to it, well I let it warm up about 5 minutes. If its really cold outside, those times are longer.
Personally, Ive never seen a diesel engine wash down a cylinder from excessive idling unless it already had and injector or cylinder problem. And ive checked the ECM in some diesels and found them to have idled for 35-40 hours straight!. But, Is it good for it, probably not!.. Good luck in whatever U decide!!

Shooot, I guess I'm lucky. I've got a 1.3 - 1.4 mile drive through my neighborhood (25 mph). Which I run about 33 mph out of respect for my neighbors. Other neighbors go MUCH faster. Anywho ... I think that little run is very good for my cars. Get's 'em all lubed up real good and slightly warmed before pulling out onto the 55 mph county road.

Thanks Gents. I appreciate the info. I tend to be a worry wort on things mechanical at times. I'll just do it like my gasser with a couple of minutes warm up then conservative driving on my urban streets until I reach the highway. There will be plenty of time for it to warm up thataway.

its about 8 mile to the highway and its warm by then. If its real cold I use the EB and fast idle. Its almost normal temps in 4-5 min as the EGTS are usually 450-475 at idle with EB on.
