You must have done something really bad to deserve that.

No the new ones certainly don't seem to easily attain the higher numbers that the older ones did. That said, the newer ones are still getting pretty good mileage though. The new Jettas are actually rated for 42 on the highway, 30 in the city, and 41 on the highway for the golf with the manual, which honestly makes no sense at all with the higher gearing of the 6 spd for 11'. The 6spd in the 11' MY turns 400 RPM's less in 6th at 70 than the DSG does at the same speed. 6th gear in the DSG is very close to 5th in the stick. 6th in the stick is more like a true over drive. It's because of this that most 6 spd owners are able to consistently attain 45+ mpg on all highway runs. Not bad if you ask me.

I'm going to test drive that 06 Golf 5 speed. The transmission/clutch is newish. The timing belt has never been changed and it has near 110K miles on it.

I think it's going to be a test drive, then to the dealer if all goes well to be checked, then maybe just leave it there to get that changed.

The belt should have been changed at about 90,000- either have them throw in a proper change (high quality belt, new idler pulley, new water pump), or have them deduct the cost of one off of the price of the car. Like stated above, it needs to be done right away.

That's the plan.

Can't wait to drive it. I put $100 in my truck Tuesday, $60 wednesday, and now I'm on a 3/4 tank and will be on 1/2 by the end of the day....

I would check out TDIclub, I'm not real familiar with the MK5 chassis, but I know that have there quirks, I'm also more familiar with the 1.8T gas motor over the diesel.

Fyi VW/audi dealers are usually worse the dodge dealer, if you get my drift.

+1 Your better off looking for a TDI Mechanic listed on TDIClub in your area. They'll probably be less price at double the quality.

At 110k miles, that timing belt is OVERDUE!

IF you buy this car...do not drive it, UNTIL that timing belt is changed. Oh, and when we say timing belt, we mean the belt, roller, tensioner, and water pump.

Look me up over there...tonyjetta

Thumbs up

Sold an 2005 Passat TDI Wagon, great car, comfortable, roomy, was dependable, read about the balance shaft issues and we had 152k on it... sold it, I would avoid only for that reason. Bought a 2011 Jetta Sportwagon TDI with 6 spd manual, I have only drove it three times because it's the wifes car. I drive daily a 2002 Beetle TDI 5spd, have owed since new, was $16000 out the door then, and now has 156k on it, getting ready for the second timing belt, 8k oil changes from up on top with syn oil. I will drive this car until the wheels fall off, still gets 46-48 mpg and I am not easy on the LiLguy. Ready to install a CAT 2mic fuel filter kit on it, yes they do have them, otherwise it just keeps ticking on.

Being a single male that works out a lot, lives near downtown, and am approaching my 30's............ I'd wonder what people would think if I drove a bug .

They are cheaper though and easier to find low mileage models.

I'm 53, about 5'11" and 325 lbs... give or take, I'm asked all the time "how do you fit in there?" I answer "with no problem", if I put driver seat all the way back, I can't dis-engage the clutch enough to shift. Actually just came back from Daytona Beach in the LiLguy, fuel cost was very low.

Personally, I do not find the bug appealing at all. Never cared for the looks / styling. Having said that, I could get over it, if I found one for the right price and needed another VW.

In the meantime, I'll stick with my Passat. I bought it as a basket case and put a rebuilt head on it, turbo, front suspension, and so on. I invested a total of $7k to get the car road worthy. Considering cost of fuel over drving my truck, I am near break even to 0!
