Re:Two stroke

They better put those See Doo engines in the snowmobiles at Yellowstone, because the 2 stokes have been banned there because of emissions. They tried to ban personal watercraft at Lake Powell for the same reason.

But they have cleaned em up and they have allowed them to run in the park again. The new technology is great. Check out yamaha's new HPDI technology on there outboards or ROTAX new DI its crazy suff.

Re:Two stroke

Yellowstone has converted over to 4 strokes, which I hear are doing a good job.

Phox, I didn't mean re-state what you aready said. Wasn't reading close enough.

Re:Two stroke

Hmmm. Interesting reading here. I learned a lot. I have a Lawn Boy lawn mower that's rated at 6.0 HP. It's a heck of a lot lighter in weight that a four stroke of the same power. It's quieter too. Just my 2-stroke $.02.

Re:Two stroke

GRRR 2 strokes are NOT banned in Yellowstone. Not from a lack of trying by tree huggers though. Real data obtained through validated methodology(sp) proved the EPA's #s were flawed. Now theres a suprise :. But the Mfgs. in a smart pre-emptive strike started building 4-strokes for the Nat'l Park rental system. Is it just me or is there something just wrong about a block heater in a snowmobile? As for Lawn Boys, you won't find a lawnmower that will power through grass like one. (Bonus: keeps mosquitoes at bay). Don't know if they were banned or if OMC's money woes and subsequent bankruptcy did them in.

My 92 Polaris Indy 500 was fuel injected. So is my 96 EXT. More efficient use of fuel/oil/air mixture = lower emmissions. SkiDoo/SeaDoo FICHT technology is light years ahead of my Cat's EFI. They bought the assests of OMC for this technology alone. 2 strokes using it in ORV applications are cleaner emmission wise than 4 strokes. But that still won't get me to ride a Scud. :P.

Now two stroke Detroits... I used to drive a Chevy Astro cabover with a 305 fuel squeezer and a Fuller 9 speed from Wpg to the beach (Vancouver) and back once a week. It even allegedly had an engine brake . 318 Detroits used to run about 2500rpm, and didn't make any power till about 2100, hence "Screaming Jimmy". 305 squeezer was 318 turned down to 2050 rpm. So you didn't even get into the engines power band. (Engineers, Gotta love 'em). None of 'em pulled well anyway. Used to say "If it looks like a hill, drop a gear. If it is a hill drop 4. ;D. Nothing about those trucks makes me long for the good ol' days. :.

There, that should have offended almost enough people for one day ;D

Re:Two stroke

The major problem field in environmental view of the 2 stroke engine is that it blows the oil through. So they passed a law over here that all 2 strokes for marine use are obliged to use 100% biodegradeable oils. These oils work very well and it's amazing how much cleaner the lakes are. The only downside of these oils is that they do cost about 15% more than mineral oils.
All MX bikes, all wood processors etc are forced to use biodegradeable lubricants and hydraulic oils. (Except in truck engines since there the oils don't work too well and the spills are infrequent compared to hydraulics leakages)

I am no treehugger, but I think that if something can be done for the environment at reasonable costs it should be done.

AlpineRAM

Re:Two stroke

Alpine Ram that is a very good point. To be honest, I had not heard about these oils. But quite honestly if they're only about 15% more expensive, thats not bad. At the risk of getting us both in trouble, any brand names which would be familiair here in North America?

I don't have a problem with saving the planet for my kids and grandkids. It's all those jerks in the Sierra Club, Blue Ribbon Coalition and that ilk that bother me intensely. We all have to get along on this blue ball, so lets start with the fact that we all have the right to exist and enjoy. Except tree huggers. And PWC riders. And smokey dirty stinky diesel truck owners and...... OOOOPS. Never mind.

Re:Two stroke

Well one of the companys making the biodegradeable stuff for over here is Castrol. 2 stroke oil is called Biolube. (Attention, read the friendly manual on the bottle )
Link is here
And this is not intended to start a flame war about oils or about treehugging!

AlpineRAM
Re:Two stroke

Well actually I don't see any problems in discussing the properties of certain materials or concepts. As long as it's kept civilized and is not flaming it's ok for me.
Please note that the stuff that is sold on your side of the pond may be different than the stuff we get over here.

AlpineRAM
