truck pull

just a quick question, has anybody ever done a tracor pulled with manual tranny, and if so how hard is it to shift gears with out losing momentum. also what kind of clutch would you run. i was wondering because it seems like it would be a lot easier in a auto.

You can't shift, you need to start off in one gear and leave it there. Too low a gear and you won't have any momentum, too high and you'll never take off... It just depends on how much power you have and what clutch...

no shifting... get a good clutch, dual disc or a big SBC... pick a high gear... 3rd or 4th.... rev the engine to a high RPM and let that sucker eat dirt...

yeah i've seen some of those videos and you see those guys slam the hammer down. would you guys say that you could get a better set up with a manual tranny or and auto? i wouldn't mind trying this out some day after i get my truck set up. another question are the pulls mostly in the summer time? thanks for all the feed back.

here's a good site to learn about setting up your truck for pulling sleds... hope Scott doesn't mind.

I have a 2001 CTD with a 5spd, and i was also thinking about pulling my truck over this summer, but was wainting to get a little bit of information on gear selection. I thought I would start off in 2nd in 4LO, but wasn't for sure. Dont get me wrong, Im not looking to pull 300 feet, im all stock, just waiting to have a little bit of fun.

don't pull in 4LO and 2nd gear... you need to pull in 4HI and at least 3rd gear, especially stock.

3rd gear in high range NO WAY!! i can barely get my truck to take off in 3rd without a load. theres no way your gonna start out in 3rd with a sled behind you. most everybody uses 2ND HI or 3RD LO. you can pull 4TH in LO but if you don't have the power byebye clutch

stock clutchs, 2 gear low range is about all they can take, you might get away with a 3rd gear pull with a 6 spped. and forget about reving it up and dumping the clutch, the stock clutch will just go up in smoke. the high rpm starts is only for the pulling clutchs, i don't know of one single that can take it. i have a con 13.25 fe and the highest i can come off the line is 2000 rpm anymore than that and it will slip in 3rd.

Well im proably going to go ahead and try it out anyway, if I burn the clutch up thats really no big deal, just a good reason to upgrade. But halerazor is right, my truck will not go anywhere if I start off in 3rd, so im guessing my best choice would be 2nd. Thanks for the information
