"This Truck Gets 28 MPG..."
...said the man I ran into at the local 7-11 last night. He was driving a truck identical to mine except it had a long bed and an auto tranny.
I stopped him on his way out the door to ask him what size tires he had put on his truck. Turned out they were 315's from a Hummer...which is good to know because they looked good on his two wheel drive truck and he claimed they didn't rub.
He then proceeded to talk about how his truck got 26-28 mpg and how he could burn the tires off of it "from here to the highway".
He also claimed that he owned 4 of them....3 of which he bought on the same day.
28 miles to the gallon. Yeah...okay buddy. Hehehe...

I never belived anything more than 20 mpg myself. However when i=we brought my 95 2500 4x4 back from Oregon we had a good tailwind and got 25mpg doin 70-75 mph. now that were home I only get 18-20 like I figured.
with their calculator..

The best my truck has EVER done was 22 mpg....and that was with no load, all highway, cruise set on about 68 mph and hand calculated.
When he told me he got 28 mpg I just kind of smiled and said, "Well, yours does better than mine then."

315's on a 2 wd??? I think not. Its hard enough to fit them on a 4X4 without any lift.
Some guys just like telling storys....he probably borrowed the truck from a buddy.

Regarding the tires, I know without a doubt that the truck was a 2WD. I also don't really doubt that they were 315's. They were very wide and filled the wheel wells. They were much bigger than my stock Michelins. I WOULD be surprised if they didn't rub, but he claimed they didn't. I can't imagine why you would have to put a lift on a Dodge 4WD to fit 315's under there.

I just have heard/read some guys saying 315's will rub on a third gen. 4X4. Every truck may be a bit different.

Dr. Evil, 305's on my truck rubbed with the stock wheels. Everybody's truck is different. My roommate has the same lift, tire size, and wheel size on his 01 CTD. His tires barley rub at full lock, mine don't rub at all.

Were you at 7-Eleven last night wearing a dirty old cowboy hat and a dirty sleeveless shirt?? 
Actually...with no load and a constant 55 mph then I suppose it MIGHT be possible to get 28 mpg in these trucks...but I'd have to see it and run the numbers myself to believe it. Not that I don't believe you. It's just not very likely. You'd be the first person I ever met that got 28 mpg.

If your truck is equiped with the overhead MPG 'guesser',
try resetting it while coasting downhill at highway speeds.
I've seen MPG readings in the 60's before.

I have averaged something on the order of 42 mpg pulling my 5er with a GCVWR of about 17,000.
Of course this was resetting the computer when I started down from the top of the pass going from about 4,000 to 200.
And of course for the rest of the 2550 miles I only averaged 10.3 mpg.
