General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

The A.S.E. certifications are exactly what you put into them. In some cases it just proves a person is capable of taking a test, but others just proves a technician's dedication to become certified as a validity to his employment and years of service. I'd like to think I am in the latter group!

(it says this on the in dash computer). as for reliability, if the car was cared for you'll see 200k easily. i don't know what engine a 3 series has( 4, 6 cyl?). mine has the v12 and runs awesome. if bmw could get this beast to run well, imagine how well the smaller engines must be.
Thanks - good info. All the ones's I'm looking at are 2.5, 2.8 & 3.0L I-6's. 250k+ should not be an issue. How do you like your V-12 (750iL _I'm assuming?)

you assume correct, i absolutely love this engine,(and car)mpg not bad either. a little overwhelming under the hood, but that's ok. if you want, check out e38.org, it has LOTS of info for all BMW's. there may be a thread on there about the sludge issue-and how to resolve-eliminate it. you will see the different links at the top for model specific BMW's (e37, e38 etc.).
hope this helps some

There are alot of ASE mechanics out there that are not very knowledgible past changing parts. Matter of fact, I find many that I am unimpressed with. Of course I also understand there are ALOT of variations of vehicles on the road and it is impossible to know all of them well. But, the oil thing definately shows a lack of general knowledge.

I'll check that page out whe I get a chance. I know the e-38 chassis is a great car to buy used, it's insane to see 2000 model 740's selling for $12k, since they sold for right around $75k new. Often they are less expensive used than a 3-series. I know they have some maintance & upkeep that can get expensive, but I'm sure there's good support for them aftermarket as well.

Actually - just snuck over there - good grief! There are so many detailed sections about replacing, repairing, retrofitting and maitaining just about everything with these cars. Not a "fancy" site at all, just a lot of good, useful information. A little overwhelming, and that's good. Thanks for the tip!
