I would find another place to do the inspection. There's no emission testing in this state for diesels. Only safety inspections.

thanks ..it still doesn't specify that diesels are exept, but i guess this is what i'm going to have to go by.. :-

 

NOTE: The inspection of the exhaust emission system shall not apply to motor vehicles altered and modified to use only a fuel other than gasoline.

The way I read it is only gasoline powered vehicles require a exhaust emission inspection. "Other" fuels not required. Other being diesel.

Really?? I didn't know that (but then I wouldn't because this is my first diesel). I wondered if not having a cat on these trucks would cause grief at the inspection station.

 

Fords don't even have a cat looking thing on their diesels. Just a muffler. When I had mine inspected, they didn't say a word. And my exhaust is dumped before the axle which is illegal on any type of engine.

 

BB your's isnt illegal if you were to strighten your turn down it would be right at the axle. They wouldnt say anything but....If you came in when you had it ending at the cab they would grip at you until you left.

The '03 Dodges don't have cat either....just pipe and a muffler. Makes it easy to change the exhaust....legally.

 

The guy doesn't know what he is talking about. Lived in this great State of Texas for 24 years never heard of that before.

 

Grrrrreat, now i'm as confused as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs :-[ ...hope someone can direct me to a site which lists which year trucks HAD and didn't have cats...would be nice to know at this point as well

That means a vehicle that has been modified to burn something other than gas. Not a vehicle that was manufactured to burn something other than diesel. So technicaly, if you convert a gasser to diesel and diesel only, it sounds like you could get away with it.

By the way, Fords DO have cats. Late model anyways. I believe they started in 2001??? However, they are appearently a true 4" though so you can have it added back and not restrict to less than 4". A lot of guys add them back to tone down that turbo shine. Otherwise, with aftermarket turbo back exhaust it sounds like a jet plane.....

However, I did find this "http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/ which down at the botton states "Gasoline powered. Diesel powered vehicles are exempt from the emissions standards, but are still required to have the annual safety inspection." It's the last item in the list of criteria for which vehicles are required to have Emissions tests done.

This is bugged me for a while and I'm glad I found someone bring it up so I had a place to start digging for it.

You act like this is a new thing for you. The guy doing your check was a dummy if he didn't know, and you should call someone and report the shop. ;D

Just find another shop and take it to them.
