Synthetic or not

Can anyone give me a good reason to use or not to use a synthetic oil, in my Cummins. And what oil would anyone recomend? I know this is probably a controversial subject but lets try to be big boys about it.

If you do a search for "synthetic oil" or just "synthetic", you'll probably get more posts than you could read in a week. I think just about every angle has been covered.

This tends to be a pretty controvercial subject (maybe that is why no one is replying to your question)......as amartinson said, there is a TON of reading on this topic.....just do a search.

Another site with a good deal of oil info is: www.bobistheoilguy.com

Good luck.

Thanks for the link to that site. What an eye opener.
Just when you think you have it all figured out, you find out you are just starting.

Play nice guys, I got the locks and chains right here. I keep them handy every time I see an oil thread.

As far as I'm concerned, synthetics simply cost too much to be of any real world value in the engine. There are many good conventional HD oils available today for a fraction of the cost of synthetic oil.

Now, in other areas of the vehicle, such as transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, and power steering units, WHERE COMBUSTION DOES NOT TAKE PLACE, I think the virtues of synthetics can be had. The extra cost is justified by safely extending the fluid change interval.

I don't really see a benefit in running synthetic while you're under warranty, because you can't extend drain intervals. Maybe after the warranty is gone it might make sense.

synthetic oil is preferable if you live in climates that get below about 15F. It simply flows much better at cold temps. To me the cost difference is no big deal, with such an expensive truck. Delvac 1 baby!

Thats why I use synthetic....15W40 doesnt like to flow very well when its -30 or -40....synthetic is also great for the high temps that you guys down south see.....
