My dad has been experiencing "surging" in his Freightliner. It will seem doggish for a bit, then take off suddenly. Its not turbo lag, either. We changed the fuel filter and havent taken it out for a drive since. Any ideas?

 

What type of fuel injection system on it? Electronic or mechanical?

BTW, what part of eastern Iowa are you in?

 

Its got a mechanical inline injection pump of some kind. Im not sure exactly what model, but its a '93. Ill take some pics and put them in my gallery. Im in clinton county (east central Iowa) in a town of about 400.

 

I'm in Cedar County, live in the town that claims the only stoplight in the whole county!

 

I know some of the 8.3L used the P7100, same as the '94-98.4 Rams do. TST has plates for them also.

Sounds like it could be a fuel pressure/supply problem, or a governor problem.

I'd be willing to come and look it over this weekend, if you like (PM adress, if you want me to). Would be in the afternoon Sat or Sun. I'm only about 1/2 hr from the Quad Cities. Very far from Dewitt?

Hmmmm. I wonder if we could rent the track in Cordova, IL. Could do a little racing. There are 2-3 dynos in the area, too. A wrench day, maybe? Say, we could BOMB a Freightliner.

Who knows. Many possibilities.

 

It is a P7100. A fuel supply problem is the most likeyl culprit, see what happens now that it has a new FF.

 

After testing it we found that the fuel filter did nothing for it. It still runs and has made several trips with the problem. It doesnt stumble and still has some power, so I dont know what to think. I think my dad will just use it like this for a while. Im not too familiar with the P7100 pumps. When you say a supply problem do you mean a problem with the injection pump or the supply of fuel to it (lift pump)?

Edit: I have added one pic of the pump that is pending approval by admins. Also, where can I get some good reading on the P7100? I have the VE pump manual; can anyone give me the P7100 manual (in pdf format)?

best thing to do is get the manual for that engine and follow the troubleshooting trees in the manual for the symptoms you are describing. you wont get any info you can use from a pump manual.

 

Lift pump, fuel lines, overflow valve, shut-off solenoid, to name a few.

Does the truck do this with fuel fuel tank(s)? If not, could be the suction pipe in the tank.

My offer still stands, to come up and help. I have my old OF valve that we can try, and a gauge that can be used to check the fuel pressure.

There a few other things we can check, also.

 

bmoeller, as for coming up this weekend, I have some cousins coming down from minnesota and staying at our house, so I dont think that will work.

We have a 8.3 also,but it Dosen't have the P7100 pump. When we first got it we where having surging problems,and found a pin whole in the suction line in the tank.
