Stumbled upon some CI-4+ Premium Blue..
I was at a local Auto Zone and up on the highest shelf they had some blue-labeled Premium Blue oil.
Knowing that the current CJ-4 spec has a red label, I decided to investigate and sure enough, it was CI-4+.
I bought them out-- only four gallons, but I was happy with my little score.
Price was still expensive, though-- $12/gal for dino.

I recently bought some Valvoline CJ Oil, from Autozone, it was buy 2, get 2 free. It is suppse to have TBN of 10+, recommended by Cummins. I guess for a CJ, that is as good as it gets. NAPA often has CI+4 in their brand, also from Ashland, very good stuff. I have about a 3-5 year supply of the NAPA.I only go 4-5k on an oil change, so it proably does not matter.

I would think that John Deere will make it for as long as there is a need for it and I bet its longer then 4 years. I know of several farmers who have started using JD oil as they say that Rotella will no longer hold up in there tractors, cars and trucks.

The "New" Rotella.....Like most other dino brand of oils has gone to a new blend called CJ classification. The prior oils were CI-4+. IT is believed by many that the newer oil doesn't protect the 5.9 Cummins engines as well as the older blend. I used to use the regular Rotella, but I have since switched to the Rotella 5w40 Synthetic in order to keep getting the CI-4+ rating. I am afraid they are eventually going to change it to...but for now it is readily available, as is, at Walmart/Autozone etc. Here is some reading that may help explain. This is a long thread in which opinions varied and changed over time as we learned more about the newer oil.

Hope this helps.

The problem with most CJ oils, syn or no, is that their TBN numbers are much less than the CI+4. The good CI+4 like the Cummins/Valvoline PB had 11-12 TBN, which allowed for extended oil changes safely. The new Valvoline CJ is endorsed by Cummins. I am told it has a 10+ TBN rating, better than any other CJ that I know.
You can still get the Valvoline Classic, the good stuff, I think. Autozone carries the CJ and may order the other CI+4(5 gal pail) if you ask.
Some NAPA's had their brand CI+4, also made by Ashland. Similar specs as Valvoline. Some still available.
