My uncle drives for a large company in Canada. They have goveners on all their trucks, along with GPS tracking devices.
They keep track of speed. If you get caught speeding you get a warning and short suspension, Next time you get fired.

Their is always ways to disable them, but if the company you work for is safety conscious they will knwo how long it should take to get from point a to point b.

For all the rigs out their who drive really fast, Good on you for being a professional. I mean I can justify anything by saying I am in control.
I had two beer and I am in control, I was doing 100 and I am in control. untill the tire blows out, the deer jumps in front me, the cars down the road stalls, etc.
I was in control the whole time as my 100,000lb or more truck rolled over that car full of kids because I couldnt stop in time.

I was driving a Army truck one day in city traffic, I was in total control, my co driver was watching around to make sure the lanes were clear.
I was doing the speed limit 80KM/hr and the max for our trucks with plenty of space between me and the car in front of me. Red light ahead of me and the car in the lane next to me deceides to cut me off and jams on his brakes, I hit mine and nothing happens. I am still going 80km/hr now and the car in front of me was getting closer. Thrue down shifting, jamming the truck into six wheel low and then applying the parking brake I managed to stop the truck but not before the front bumper was over the rear of the car in front of me. I was in total control the whole time. Had I of been going any faster the consequesnce would have been deadly. In the car was a mother with two small kids.

**** happens and when it does it takes a professional driver to make the right choice and that choice is to not speed. This is for the safety of everyone. No matter how great of a driver you are when things happen they come fast. You doing that6 extra 10-20mph may mean the difference between life and death for someone. Reguardless of who is at fault you or the other person.

Yes trucking companys auto makers should all be limiting the speed of their vehicles. If you have a valid reason that you need more speed then you can go through the channels to get it. The same as for hauling heavy or over size loads on the highway.

Should you have a limit of power no. Your power should be their but the speed should not be.

My $0.02 I said No frigin way, like 59FORD said you want fresh veggies, they won't be delivered by JBHunt. Now like I said above, you don't get these many miles accident free, by being stupid, I drive sensible when I need to but you give me a open stretch and a good front door.......by god I'll put the pedal to the medal.

how about IT'S UNSAFE to go 10-15mph slower than everyone else!!!!!! they cause wrecks! they may not actually be IN those wrecks, so I guess that's great for their insurance companies, but they cause other people to wreck!

I don't have time right now to read through all the post, but what really chaps me is when two truckers get side by side and both have the limiters on their rigs and it takes 10 mile for one to slow down or finally let the other one over. They are too stubborn to get passed and block up the road. I show courtesy to anyone driving a truck, pickup with trailer, or anything other than a car. I let them over, flashs them through, whatever it takes to make their life easy, it just hacks me when they don't do the same for me! O-well, life ain't fair.

They should be able to bump up speed to pass or a few other instances. Someone already has control of almost every aspect of our lives, ya, why not add another thumb pushing down on our heads! I hate stupid laws!

I'd like to see this researched further to determine how many of those truck collisions were caused by a car that encroached into the truck driver's lane without warning due to driver inattention, or impatience.
How many times have you seen a car jump in front of a rig and nail the brakes as traffic is slowing in an attempt to get one car ahead of where they were, or dive for the right side exit ramp from the left lane?
Speed limiters on trucks will have no affect on the ID10Ts that are handed driver's licenses because that could correctly answer a few questions, and make it all the way around a city block without causing a fatal accident.

Speed doesn't kill, it's the difference in speed that kills.

I hated pulling my trailer through CA last summer, the speed limit for vehicles with trailers on two-lane highways was 5 mph less than the posted speed. I personally witnessed two-near head on collisions because of the impatient people piled up behind me trying to pass and go the speed limit+. It's not good for the heart.

Speed does not cause accidents!!!!! Drivers do.
Trucks need to be able to keep up with traffic, and have a reserve for passing.
Yes, some truckers drive way too fast for conditions, as do some car drivers.
Yes, some truckers drive while too tired, again, as do some car drivers.
If any "devices" are put on, it should go on all vehicles, not just trucks.
Anyone with a license can jump in a motorhome, or rental truck, and drive all night, after working all day, with no training, no restrictions on how many hours allowed to drive, and no stopping at weigh stations for safety checks.
I don't recall the exact number, but somewhere around 80% of truck accidents were caused by someone in a car, and the trucker crashed trying to avoid them.
Unsafe drivers are the main problem. Whether it be inattentiveness due to cell phoning, etc., or DUI, or impatience, or poor driving skills, that is what needs to be addressed, of course that would be political suicide, and would never happen. Much easier to blame "those damm truckers", than to actually solve any problems.
I agree with this guy

The need for speed for everyone is the number one killer in road accidents.
I lost track of how many times I have been driving 10kmhr over the speed limit to be passed by a Semi doing no less then 120. Only to get stuck behind him going up the mountains.

Pedal to the metal, when in doubt floor it. How many of the rigs end up in the ditch here in Canada due to speeding, lots of them, how many rigs slide off the road on their own accord, lots of them, Exact numbers fog my mind right now.

I have been in conditons where the roads were total ice, I was in 4x4 and wheels were slipping, only to be passed by some imnpatient logging truck, only to have his trailer slide back early and almost take me out. This occurs more times then enough. With other trucks.

Love the million mile man, or the impatient truck driver who cannot wait to pass a person who is doing the speed limit and obeying the rules. Tailgating then trying to pass on blind corners. yippee, glad to see that.
I love seeing the comapny trucks who obey the rules, as oppsoed to the guys who run amuck and do as they please.
Keep up the great work of keeping North America supplied with fresh lettace.

The number one cause of death in workers in Alberta Canada is vehicle accidents. Guess why, long hours speeding and crappy roads. But they must get their on time. Must get the lettace to market so to speak. Tell that to the comapny who now has lost a $300,000 truck and a dead driver, plus the dead person in the car. Love speeding, even the responsible truck drivers are acknowledging the true price of speeding in their industry. They are the ones saying although it sucks we need to regulate the industry so that less crashes occur.

I love the big trucks and the fast trucks as much as the next guy does. Do not get me wrong. I think when you are a professional driver you should be doing so with in the law, not speeding and not speeding for the road conditions.

By governing engines you are increasing the safety margin of those who opperate them. I would like to see all vehciles with these installed. Commercial and passenger.

In our busy life we have to go faster and have more power.

I do agree that any company (not the manufacturer) that has equipment on the roads should set some type of speed limiter on the equipt. but, 68 come on now? how about 73? I know at 68 the truck does actually become a hazard, if traffic is flowing at a clip of 70-75 the truck is just in the way let alone trying to get 80,000lbs up a hill?
Again, I agree DRIVERS cause accident's whether it be fatigue, sleeplessness, talking on the phone, CB, 2 way, daydreaming or plain old just not paying attention heck some drivers just don't care, "its not my truck".
Truck, auto or motorbike it does'nt matter the speed, it comes down to the person in control the driver. Whether you kill someone while backing out your driveway or hit someone in a parking lot at 3 mph or crash on the interstate at 55, 68 or 73 they are dead at any speed it comes down to drivers being held accountable.
Here's a thought, IF you drive a company commercial vehicle you the driver are 50% responsable for the liability insurance of the vehicle you drive? boy O boy, I bet you would see the speeding tickets and driver related accident rates fall pretty quick let alone the maintenance/fuel costs plummet.

As a O/O I was responsible for 100% Of all my Insurance...personal, full coverage on truck and trailer, plus two million in cargo insurance. I paid 100 % of all my speeding tickets, never had a accident, overweight, log book nor have I ever failed any vehicle inspection, and yes all maintenance/fuel cost,
plus paid all other cost myself.

Yes HOS Rules/Regulations Suck both new and old.
They being debated and challenged by OOIDA

Now about those trucks running side by side, there might be many reasons
1. Hill climb...not always avoidable but can be a ***** if a large car loses his momentum from one reason or other
2. JBHunt and Schnieder doing a drag race
3. Some driver was being a major butthead and a driver pulled out to block him off an slow him down for a little while
3. Now this one is a trade secret....Seat covers and not the ones at the auto store. one driver will move over to slow her down so we can all get a look and toot our horns.

boy i agree with you 200%. when i was checking in to tbs in quantico, va, i was in my 99 f250. i followed a mack heading up north as well. we left beaumont, tx and we followed each other the whole way. especially when they are cutting the wind for you pushing 80 on wide open interstate, you can just sit there and draft'em. i dont tail gate, but it helps some. growing up, i was allways pulling a load 4-6 times a week. i feel the truckers as well when just as you get up to speed, some 4banger pulls out on ya, or no one will let you over when trying to make a lane change.
