Should manufacturers put 68 m.p.h. speed limiters on big trucks ?

ATA is petitioning FHWA to force manufacturers to put 68 m.p.h. speed limiters on big trucks because speed is a factor in many accidents . OOIDA says this is pure BS . Most "excessive speed" incidents happen well below 68 m.p.h. in construction zones , on highway ramps , and on rural roads . Some experts claim the extra fatigue caused by more driving time required when driving slower trucks causes a greater hazard than driving a few miles an hour faster . I'd like to hear the opinion of the public in general . ( Not to try to sway your opinion but government speed control on big trucks today , CTD pickups tomorrow ??)

Kinda don't know what to say about this... my dad drove a truck when I was gorwing up, and we hauled butt! I think that this needs to be in all vehicles, but that would be counter productive to this web site!

Any class 6-8 truck can have the road speed set at whatever the company policies dictate. Most OTR trucking companies usually set their roadspeed limits between 68 mph and 72 mph as per agreement with their insurance co.
It only takes about 2 minutes with the laptop to set it up.

Imagine our trucks being set like that?

as madhat mentioned it needs to be all vehicles.why not just go after everybody that pulls a trailer!!the reason i say this is i see lots of idiots out there everyday that shouldn't be driving a car let alone pulling a trailer down the road at 70-80 mph.what i find funny is you see those u-haul trailers that say "do not exceed 45 mph",right on the front of the fenders and backwards so you can see it in the mirror.but i have yet to see one get pulled that slow.they should set up a centrifigul type brake that once it exceeds say 55 it locks up the tires, and you have to stop and back-up to release.go to take the trailer back and it has flat spots,oh baby your buying a set of tires.

I think effective enforcement of the Hours of Service and setting it up so you get a "better class of person" behind the while would be better than a governor. Many owner-operators have no business driving a go kart, never mind 80k lbs on a public road.

no, it's dangerous... they need to be able to run 5-7 over the speed limit in order to pass... they clog up the roads when they're trying to pass on the governor and are both running within half a MPH of eachother.

The same idiots that want to limit trucks probably loved the 55 mph speed limit. You get out in the country running big hills and 68 mph limit downhill will mean 45 mph or less up hill. Most over-the-road drivers today hold thier speeds down to conserve fuel anway, but in order to pull a hill you have to be able to get a run at it. It's all in the momentum carried at the bottom of the hill. The interstate speed limit in the eastern part of the U.S. is 60mph, 68 would be speeding there, but west of the Mississippi River and it's 70mph. They would turn into rolling roadblocks with cars going along at 75.

this is a little off topic but i drove a rollback for like 5 years and i got outta a tickit with this device/limiter. i was going 75+ in a 65 and got stopped.
long story short i took it to court and had the co. mechanic sighn a statement that said we had all trucks goverened at 65. lol they threw it out!
btw
i think they should be goverened at like 80s if they must do it
ive followed many 18 wheelers doing 85+
with it goverened too low how would you get a good run at any hill

OK, this is in NO way a flame, but

Lets say you take a load of produce from California to NYC.
You will deliver the 4th morning or loose BIG money. That is
3000 miles in 60 hours, get the picture. You have to run 60 MPH
while you are sleeping in order to get there.

How much are you willing to pay for YOUR fresh produce, YOUR fresh meat,
YOUR fresh seafood, Oh! and what about that little gear YOU need for YOUR
transmission.

30+ years on my behind, 4 MILLION+ miles, NO ACCIDENTS, ever, none, nada!
However, I have paid $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for those stupid tickets.

The above is my opinion, if you don't like it, I'am sorry.

All vehicles should be goverened at the max speed limit + 10.

Like you said Rick G, with the overspeed accidents being under 68 mph, maybe the governor should be wirelessly controlled and take effect when entering a speed zone. Say you hit a 55mph speed zone and you run 60, the electronic governor be reset to 55 and so on down the line and up. Maybe have a manual override that has a time stamp on it if there is an accident involved with speed.

Maybe we should all wear helmets and fire suits when we drive as well... We could mandate that.... Infact... Lets make Nascar safety requirments on all cars and reduce the speed limits to 35mph....
Get real!!! I drive as fast as I can afford... I don't have 4 millions miles on my butt >> maybe half of that but no accidents (on the road>> plenty on the track) ....
How is this... Better training!
Education in basics through advanced skills... I hate hearing about people talking about parallel parking as if it is the most complicated thing to do in a car... We need to teach everything from fueling > Maintenance > Flat Changing > Parking > Braking > Throttling > "What if" situations > Rain/Snow/Ice/Gravel/Sand/Mud Driving > Effects of Alcohol Medication and Drugs on Timing and motor skills > How NOT to get stuck... How to get out of it....
I say that people need to be able to put a car out of control and then regain it again... (in a controlled situation of course) >>> Then do it again.. and again so that when it happens on an icy or wet road they don't freak out and over correct and kill themselves or others.
Teach EVERYTHING....
Heck >> In Texas you don't even have to take a driving test any more to get a license and you think a throttle governor is going to fix all problems?

Do what on the Texas drivers test? Are you talking about when reapplying for a license? I know I took one when I was 16. Might get a new one with Class A on it when I turn 21, that way I will have a license that no one will have to read to see that I'm over 21. Otherwise I will be 24 when I get a new one.

I don't think trucks should be obstacles. They ought to be able to run with traffic. When traffic is running 75 mph, a truck running 68 messes up the flow. Everyone is dodging to get around, that's more dangerous than a speeding truck. On local roads I run the speed limit (if I have a long enough run to get the slow pig moving that fast), but out on the highway I run with traffic.
