Now this brought back some old memories,....
When I was a kid still in high school I was a plow hand for a few farmers that had pretty nice, and new equipment.
One day I had been plowing with a pretty new John Deere 8630. They are a big 8 tire (dual) articulating, 250sumtin hp tractors, Anyhow, I had dropped what ever implement that I had been pulling and was heading back to the owners place,(about 10 miles). If any of you have ever been around a 8630 they will cover a county road from grass to grass and sit pretty high off the ground. As I was moving along I spotted a pickup that I kind a recognized,... the kid that owned it had been trying to plow my girlfriend (so to speek) for about a month and I knew about it.
I swung the tractor off the road to go check it out, when I got close I could tell that they had been muddin' around and tearing the crap out of this farmer's field. As he was just getting out of the mudded area he got stuck within about 10 feet of dry ground but could not make it and apparently they had left to go get another vehicle, no one was around.
Before they left, they had tied a short piece chain to the front and left it lying on the ground.
Being the young edit that I was, I remove the chain from the front and moved it to the back, then hooked that big ol' tractor to it and drug the pick up halfway out in the field, I had lots of wheelspin and was steering the tractor back and forth completely covering that pickup and almost filling the bed completely full of mud. It got so heavy I can hardly pull it. I remove the chain and tied it back on the front of his pickup(grinin' from ear to ear). Almost got my tractor stuck trying to get out of there. I would have liked to see the look on that edit face when he got back there and figger out he needed another 900 feet a chain! LOL
Later I told the farmer what them guys had been doing out there and what I had done so he would know why his field was so rutted.

We have a little side business welding up and delivering cages for coke machines. This was back when I had the '90 F350. We pulled up to a school and saw where the cage would go. The ground LOOKED okay, but about 100' from the cement I couldn't go any farther. I don't have AT tires, and on that truck were 235/80-16 Michelin LTX MS that just spun on top. It would have dug in if I stayed at it long enough.
A crane (approx. 20T) grabbed the back of the trailer, picked nearly up off the ground and got me moving.
With current truck I took my shop built single axle 5x12 trailer to my Aunts place and loaded up a bunch of scrap metal. It got on some slippery stuff coming out and again it just spun on top.
Aunts tractor got me out.
I can see a use for 4WD, but I get in a situation where it would help MAYBE one time in a year.
I think maybe AT tires would help, but I don't want to give away any mileage!

I have a queer one. I got all agitated because a big tractor with rear scraper blade was only running like 15 on a back, snow covered road. I went around him, front left tire caught the snow that was piled in the ditch, spun the truck around instantly and packed it in the bank.......
The guy on the tractor (nice fella) stopped, got a chain he had hanging on the blade off, hooked me up and tugged me out.
He said "Man, your tailgate was about a foot from taking out that blade, you don't even know how close you were when you spun.
This was in my old, old truck, an 87 1/2 ton chevy, lifted on 35's.....
Another, less exciting one was also in the snow with my 01 CTD, I got pulled out by a gasser Ford................
