Sea Foam
Hey all...
Been listening to my 05 knocking for a while now.. I have tried Lucas and it quieted down some, and then tried power service and the knocks came back loud again.. Back to Lucas and no help this time.
Of course the dealer says this is normal and diesels are susposed to make noise...
Reading around in here I have heard of several people using Sea Foam.. Some put it in the fuel filter canister and have had good results.. I ran across it to day at the store so I bought 6 cans..
The Instructions say to either put a 50/50 mix in the filter canister or put 1 oz per gallon in the tank.. I opted for the 2 16oz cans in the tank. I figure I'll try this for a couple of tanks and by that time it should be ready for a fuel filter so I can do the 50/50 thing then...
Hope this works my truck sounds sick compared to other 05's... I love the sound of a good running diesel but this knocking just turns my stomach wondering what it might be doing to the engine.
Hope this stuff works!!!

If using the SeaFoam doesn't cure your knock, then nothing will. It's powerful stuff, which is why it's so expensive. Be aware that it might take a few tankfuls of running hard with SeaFoam before things quiet down completely.
Good luck!

You also might want to try that Tone Ring mod that was on the Performance thread a while back. I noticed that when I fully advanced mine it had a more pronounced "knock"
Just a suggestion... but it is cheap to find out.
Here is the thread I found it on...

I know seafoam is a good stabilizer for gas plus it'll clean out pretty much any engine. I always have a can around. I ran a can through my truck when I got it , but have stuck with other additives since then- its like $5 a can and each can treats one tank with a 33 gallon tank =\

Seafoam is good stuff but truth be known it's easy to make it yourself. Seafoam is 50% by weight pale oil, 30% naphtha and 20% isopropyl alchohol (rubbing alchohol). Instead of pale oil (refrigerant mineral oil) I would use TCW3 two stroke mixture oil.

Interesting. So the pale oil is the upper end lubricant and the other two are solvents? Using 2 stroke oil instead of pale oil you ought to be able to make 2 gallons for the cost of 2 cans Which one acts as the fuel stabilizer?

There's been many reports of the valves clearance being off from the factory. While still within tolerance it's enough to introduce noise. I checked mine. Then remembered why mine were dead on. They were adjusted when the injectors were modified.

Aren't you suppose to stay away from alcohol based additives in the common rail system? It messes with the water separator.

Dunno but the link you provided said to stay away from fuel with 10-15% ethanol, while a can of sea foam would be adding just 4 oz of the alcohol. 15% of a full tank is more like 5 gallons.
