I have an Auterra, its the older model and doesn't read the new CAN bus. Since I have gotten the 06 CTD, I was interested in getting the new model that read the CAN bus, talked to Auterra, and they say its not fully functional for the diesel and won't guarentee it will do as advertised. Since you have an earlier model, it may work. As far as Auterra software for pre-CAN its great. Pulls the codes, interperts them and clears them if you want. I have mine hooked up to a Palm IIIc, and have had it hooked to many cars, and have even been able to pull codes that shops have miss interperted.

You just need to verify that it will support the exact year/model, bus, and diesel engine codes and readings. I have not really found any that can do that completely. Or at least not anything under $3,000.

I have this software. All it requires is his cable adapter and the free software download.
I have had great success with my gas engines. I have yet to try it on a diesel..
