Royal Purple OR Amsoil. Your thought's, pros & con's......

I did notice a HUGE difference in my NV4500 switching to Redline MTL ATF. Shifts a lot easier when the truck isn't moving, and seems not to shift differently in colder weather. For what it's worth.
I run premium blue year around, sometimes I wonder if the blend is a little thick for our weather in Omaha. Worst I've started it up was -14F without being on the block heater. Power Steering complains a little at this temp, I idle it for 30 seconds, another minute or so at 1200-1400RPM until the smoke clears, then take off ever-so-clowly to let her watrm up. I have 1.5 miles of stone roads before the highway, I take it easy in 2nd gear and by time I hit the highway, the coolant needle has moved over into the operating range. I try to stay off boost until it's entirely warmed up. Truck's running great at 233,000 miles.

I changed to Amsoil at 15000 miles to start "on track." I didn't want to wait to 30K. I drove mine pretty hard on dino for the first 15,000 miles so I figured it was ready.

Back a couple years ago on my Talon's forum I did a comparison of different synthetic (g@sser!) oils and a couple normal ones just for sake of comparison, Royal Purple didn't fair out to well compared to the rest of the pack. I'd go with Amsoil, it is what I ended up running in that car. I run Mobil 1 15w50 in my MB though, it claims to have a pour point of -50*F or so, but in single digit temperatures if I crank the motor it'll hold it for quite a few seconds like it is pumping grease....

OK, I'll play.
In spite of other opinions, wouldn't run anything but synthetic in below-zero starts or over 100*F ambient while pulling a load uphill, and I encounter both on a regular basis each year. I believe the "edge" is worth the price. But it's a subjective judgement, based on experience.
After years of "experimenting" in different trucks and jeeps, I've settled on Redline driveline oils. Run MTL in the 6 speed tranny, high-temp ATF in the transfer case, 75w-90 in the front differential, and 80w-140 in the rear. All syn, all Redline, some will say overkill, but I have no reason to be unhappy. MTL seems to do best in the NV5600.
Run Mobil 1 Delvac 5w-40 now in the engine, but I'm still experimenting with that. (Redline diesel oil is another group IV PAO, but is just too expensive for change schedules that I feel comfortable with. Also not API approved, which means not much, but get you trouble with DC over warrantee issues.)
A Redline dealer that I've had excellent results with is Al Smith in Baltimore. He runs a lot of specials -- free shipping on over $100, or choose an additional product for free over $100, things like that. www.synlubes.com

Lets see Ive ran Delo, Amsoil, Premium blue, and Rotella. My favorite oil is the one on sale. Ive used Fram, Baldwin, Fleetguard, Wix, and Mobil 1 filters.
Tranny is Amsoil w/ LubeGuard additive. With all origianl internal parts except for the 2nd gear band and VB. Id say its good stuff.
Differential -- Amsoil with additive.
Change it when your supposed to and you have nothing to worry about.

I am getting ready to convert to Amsoil products bumper to bumper.
15W-40 AME in the engine, Series 2000 75W-90 in front diff, Series 2000 75W-140 in the rear diff, Series 2000 75W-90 in the 5 speed tranny, and ATF in the transfer case. I am going to use the AEF flush in the engine as well.
On another note - anyone know the recommended change intervals with these products? I tried pulling the Amsoil info up on thier website, but couldn't read it.
I am going to continue to use Fleetgaurd Stratapore oil filters.
Thanks!
Matt

Oh I forgot to mention I use Redline in the drivetrain of both my cars whether in the transfer case or differential, however I use some other stuff in the tranny generally. BG Synchroshift in the Talon's manual, and Mobil 1 ATF in the MB's auto. I'd switch to Delvac if I could find a reasonably priced seller of it, I bought up several gallons of M1 5qt bottles for $20ea.
Just to bring a comparison to the table here, here is the link to royal purple diesel oil spec page and here is a link to amsoil 15w40 synthetic. Since I know you want good low temperature traits lets compare that....
AMS: CCS Viscosity @ -20°C, cP (ASTM D 2602) 3600
RP: CCS Viscosity @ -25°C, cP 21100
Granted the temperature is different but the Royal Purple is brutal, I'd go with a dino oil like Delo before using it. I almost think that number is lower than M1 or Delvac as well (meaning the amsoil would pump even better in the cold).
