china mart

The Rotella synthetic went from $16.95 to $20 a gallon in september, then jumped to $22 a couple weeks later.

The synthetic Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 with SuperSyn is $26 a gallon now at the china mart.
Inflation sux.

I don't trust the OA as I have heard that they don't test for the additives that have been removed that protect our engines in the first place. So the OA will always come back good, no matter what. The TDR did a really good article on CJ vs. CI rated oil about a year ago. after reading that I started searching for something to replace it with for my 99. The ULSD and CJ 4 oils are all meant to reduce ash in the DPF on new emissioned trucks. They don't care about how long our engines and injector pumps last. Just like fuel economy, they only care about emissions.
The OA may not test for certain additives BUT if the oil was lacking what it needed the OA WOULD show high numbers for wear metals etc so OA's in my opinion are accurate. If the OA shows no elevated wear then the oil isn't causing damage, plain and simple.
As far as "really good articles",you can find just as many in favor of the new CJ,just depends what you want to believe.

Example please. I have seen none in favor of the new CJ oils. As a matter of fact, reading up on the Cummins literature they will even tell you that the reformulation is only for emissions, Oil and Fuel both. I would be more that willing to read something unbiased in favor of CJ 4 rated oil.

All you have to do is google it,there is a whole days reading on the subject.
I haven't saved any bookmarks to articles that I've read but you can believe me when I say I've read many articles about the possible effects of the new CJ on older engines. I was left unconvinced that the CJ will cause my 5.9 any harm.
Some of the articles I remember where in fleet type magazines and also heavy equipment type magazines.
As I said before there are articles going both ways, believe what you will but if you can't find those articles you're not searching very hard.

Also I didn't say that I've read ANYTHING saying CJ is better but I've read alot saying it's no worse and in fact equal in most respects.
I don't want to turn this into a huge debate I'm just saying that in my researched opinion that the CJ is a suitable substitute.

The TBN results I have had with Valvoline PB are,

CI4+ at 5000 miles = 10.0 -----------Iron 22
CJ4 at 4900 miles = 7.3 ------------Iron 24
CJ4 at 6740 miles with half of that towing at about 19,200 gross = 6.4 ------------Iron 33

I will definitely be watching the Iron on the next change.

BUT What about almost all the SYNTHETIC Oils being 5-40 rated and Cummins recomending 15-40..

Is the 5-40 good for year round use?

Here 's a link to Rotella T Synthetic 5-40 CJ4

Another vote for Valvoline PB, recommeded by CUMMINS. I do not think it gets any better than that. Best TBN #'s of any CJ?

I am looking for the Rotella replacement too - the NAPA store has 3 gal of CI-4+ (no CJ-4 in the API symbol) Valvoline Extreme 5w-40 ('fully' synthetic) for $29.19 @ gal. but the Valvoline site only shows the CJ-4 version of the 'Extreme'. Pretty much the cost of Amsoil and who knows how long I'll be able to get it? I sent an email to Valvoline and they haven't responded.

I'll probably just switch to Amsoil with the Donaldson filter and run it 15k+ miles to get my money's worth.

I am no oil expert either. However, as I understand it.......the CJ-4 is the newest blend of oils made for all the 07.5 on up dpf equipped trucks. The oil manufacturers claim it's backwards compatible to the older trucks........but there are some important ingredients being reduced or removed from the oil.....such as ZDDP (zinc) and phosphorus. This may be potentially effecting the long term wear on our engines.

I am sticking with CI-4+ oil as long as I can while this plays out.

Hey, thanks for the info....now that I just dumped in 2.5gal last night on an oil change.

I've run ZDDP additive when breaking in a new motor and GM dealerships sell it for about $10. Not sure if this may end the stress for those w/low ZDDP levels and ready to jump off the cliff.
