rotella t 5w 40 is now CJ4?!
When did this happen!? i guess i haven't been on the boards much, but what the hell, that was one of the main reasons i keep using the stuff. anyone done an analisis on it yet? i remember others talking about CJ4 oils not being so great and having to do oil changes at sooner intervals. whats everyones thoughts? heck i still have a jug of CI4 plus in my garage from the last change. wish i had bought alot more!

I don't have any experience with Rotella T but have had OA done on Valvoline Premium Blue CJ4 oil. I put over 6800 miles on the oil with exactly half of it towing my 5er at a GCVW of about 19,200 lbs. The OA came back OK with slight differences from an OA I did with CI4+ oil with 5000 miles on it.
The jury is still out on the long term (300,000 - 400,000 miles) effects of the changes to the oil.

Yeah I noticed the change in Rotella 5w40 a while back myself. Very dissappointing! I switched to that from the dino Rotella because of this change to CJ.
I have enough oil for either 2 or 3 more oil changes (CI 4+ Rotella syn) then I honestly don't know what im going to go to. I am considering John Deere. I am staying away from the CJ stuff for as long as I can.

I think everyone is panicing about the CJ-4 stuff,OA don't lie and I've read of many that where fine.
I think it might be a problem if we where still running 500ppm fuel but the CJ-4 is meant for the ulsd fuel. I really worried about it at first but I don't think it's a problem. I decided that it would cost me more worry, time, and money to try and track down the CI-4 than just running the CJ-4 and being done with it.
There are thousands of big rigs running the new oil thousands of miles and you don't see them dropping like flies. I've got bigger issues to worry about.

Yes it is now. At first it was the Regular Dino 15w40 Rotella. That is when I switched to the Synthetic 5w40. Now they are ruining it too, imo.
Hi Voltage....you do have a point. I don't recall hearing of any failures from running CJ blend oils. Since I change my oil every 5k anyway, it probably won't hurt a thing to run it. I just hate to compromise such an important thing like oil. In the mean time, i'll let somebody else guinie pig their truck with the new blend while I wait for my CI-4+ stock to run out....and make a decision for the future.

For what it's worth, Valvoline Premium Blue is endorsed bt Cumnins and, I believe it has the highest TBN numbers of any CJ blend. On top of that, there have been many price promotions on it. The old VPB had the best CI+4 numbers and I believe in CJ format, this seems like it will be true again.
Besides, if you go 5k and change your oil, regardless of LSD fuel, I do not think it will matter.
The VPD is reasonabaly priced & endorsed by Cummins. Best TBN numbers(I think?). Does it get better than that?

still running the rotella, guess now it will be the CJ-4 blend. i change mine pretty regularly, i just have always been an oil guy and like using good stuff, and changing often. taken alot of engines apart and see whats going on. oil is really important, maybe not to a guy that drives his truck to 100,000 and sells it off... but to a guy like me that uses it up well past that mark i'll change often and with good oil. premium blue is just to hard for me to find around here. and is it a 15w 40? regular or syn? what the price per gallon?

Union 76 still sells CI 4 rated oil in their Guardal oil. And they do sell it in gallons. Or you can buy a 55 gallon drum or it. I paid a little over $550 for the drum which saves a bit. When they finally stop carrying this I will be using Opti-lube oil additive at each oil change. I don't trust the OA as I have heard that they don't test for the additives that have been removed that protect our engines in the first place. So the OA will always come back good, no matter what. The TDR did a really good article on CJ vs. CI rated oil about a year ago. after reading that I started searching for something to replace it with for my 99. The ULSD and CJ 4 oils are all meant to reduce ash in the DPF on new emissioned trucks. They don't care about how long our engines and injector pumps last. Just like fuel economy, they only care about emissions.
