Putting 2cycle oil in fuel/Bad or Good?
Hey all. I was at the station today filling up and noticed I was out of MMO. The station didn't have any fuel treatment for diesel fuel. Since I always put in some type of additive and like to do it before adding fuel, I saw some Penzoil 2cycle outboard oil on the shelf I thought what the hell; couldn't hurt. So I tried some. I noticed a 1mpg improvement in mileage, and nothing wierd or out of the ordinary. So is this ok to do on a regular basis? Has anybody done this before? I'm thinking this stuff would be a great lubricity additive when the new Ultra Low diesel comes out. That is of course if it is safe to use.

You should be fine running the 2 cycle oil but it does have a higher additive content than used oil. The additives can cause a build up on the injectors. Running oil can also clog the cat if you have one. I personally run 2-4 gallons of used oil with every tank in my 95 as an additive. My 04.5 only gets PS.

Thanks Mickey. Thats what i thought. This stuff seems to burn pretty clean in the gas 2cycles, and because our diesels burn at a much higher temp i figured it wouldn't harm anything. I mean you hardly ever see deposits in 2cycle gas engines unless the mixture you run is really rich all the time. Have you had any problems using it the way you do? Do you use it at every fill up? How much do you ad per tank?

I run 16oz of Power Service in every tank. Every other tank I will add 8oz of TCW-3. No issues so far. Running PS does make the engine run smoother and quieter. I use TCW-3 for a little extra lubrication for the lift pump, injection pump and injectors.

On one of the other sites there is a very long thread about using a Power Service/Marvel Mystery Oil mix. http://dieselram.com/cgi-bin/ultimat...c;f=8;t=000329 if you're interested. You can also use NON-detergent motor oil.

Of course, there's always ashless 2-cycle oil formulated for large, natural gas fueled integral engine/compressors. One doesn't find it at the corner stop-and-rob, but that would be an excellent oil to add to diesel fuel. Because these large engines can't afford the downtime to "punch carbon" from the ports, the base stocks and additives of ashless 2-cycle oils are selected to burn without leaving deposits.

I run Howes diesel treat in every tank , and it definetly helps with fuel milage, I would consider using 2 stroke oil , but never in my life would i dump used engine oil in my tank.
Why do you change your engine oil folks? because it is garbage!

I don't think it would be a bad idea, but the stuff I run for 2 stroke mix is too expensive to burn at 17 miles per gallon. Plus it'll seperate at anything below 40 degrees outside.

If I was going to do it, I would probably run this. However, if you run even 1 qt. per tank, it's still about $9 per tank for your oil.

Perhaps to the public at large. In my business, access to thousands of gallons of Pegasus 801 is no problem at all.
Actually, I linked Pegasus 801 so that people could see the sulfated ash levels of a true ashless 2-cycle oil used on industrial engines. I would check the Redline and Amsoil product data sheets to ensure that their sulfated ash levels are comparable.

man, when you have to go to school and work also just to give all your money away to the fuel pump, you will put any thing in the tank to save a dime or two. I have done it, and I always filter it. I never have had any problems. Besides, what can used motr oil really do. It get filtered before it touches the tank, then filtered before it touches the injection pump. What can it really hurt. I dont have a lot of knowledge on a diesel, but I know that the more lubricant the better.
Also, our power companys back in the day used to take the oil out of the blown transformers and pour it straight to their tanks. We have also done this in the oil fields, and some of our trucks see 750 000 miles and they still purr to this day. so what is wrtong with running used motor oil?

I too would like to get more feed-back on this issue. Has anyone else burned used engine oil for extended periods in our CTD engine? What kind of results did you get?
What percentage of the owners with CTD, would you say, run some kind of fuel additive such as MMO, MMO/PS, or 2-cycle oil?
Has anyone looked at the additional cost per mile, and whether it makes "cents" to do so?
