Most opt for the cheapest two of course.

Down here Shell sells premium diesel. All I know that it has a higher cetane rating of around 46. Which maybe a mute point in Texas since we are switching over to LED (Light Emission Diesel) fuel with a cetane rating of 48.

Premium diesel??
Heck i didnt even know such a thing EXISTS! Either ways i agree with infidel, i see no marketing of premium diesel, so ill just go to my lil pump and get diesel, and keep up with filters..

Some companies in certain regions make true premium diesel, from more refined basestocks, lower sulfur, heavy additive package, and high cetane. Most premium diesel fuels are just what Shovelhead said - more $$ for a little detergent thrown in..
However I luckily have acess to a true premium - bp diesel supreme. 50 cetane minimum, higher btu than reg #2 by a bit, and a heavy additive package. It is not distributed thru any pipelines with diesel $#2, it's kept separate every step of the way.
They key is to figure out if what you have available is true premium or not.... What I will not pay extra for is regular #2 that is additized and called premium.

With price of diesel so high these days, and going higher($3.45 Gallon Canadian now), I would not pay anymore for premium. I have used Shell and Husky premium both for hauling trailer, and did not notice any real mileage (hand calculated) or power differences of note. I use regular diesel and Powerservice addditive every tank. Although with different brand names I have noticed variations with power, smoke and mileage(wind,speed,load are factors). If you got all additives, and not just 2 to rate as premium, it might be worth considering. When you ask what is in premium diesel here, you get that deer in the headlight look , even from owner, or that it's proprietary information. Stick with regular diesel.
