Pluses and minuses of Common Rail vs. 2nd gen 24v?
As many might know, I've been doing my research here for most of the summer. Now my question turns to 24v versus Common Rail. Pluses between the two, but what are the minuses? Who has gone Common Rail and went back to 2nd gen? But not just the engines, but the trucks themselves? I want a manual, so automatic talk doesn't effect me. Mileage change?
If you've had/have both how are they?

As far as noise, can't I just put a after market muffler on it or just remove it all together to fix that "quiet" noise?

I guess the noise from the engine room will depend on the person. I for one enjoy the clikity clak and rattle of my 24 valve. Others like the gentle purr of their HPCR.
The negative of the 24 valve.....yep, the Vp-44. The lift pump can be upgraded, something I'm saving to do but you'll always have the Vp. Not sure if there is a proven reliability in the Vp after the lift pump has been upgraded to say a FASS or Walbro with higher volume of fuel flow, or it may still just die.
The 24 valve does have lower stock HP, but add a power puck or something like that and your just about at earlier 3rd gen Hp levels(305/600)
I still really can't say anything negative about my truck other than my Vp, but I knew about it when I bought it so I have $1000 laying around just in case, but I have had it replaced by D/C so it has warranty again.
I'm just happy I finally have my Dodge with the Cummins, negative about my truck.....oh yeah, wish I had not broken my right rear tailight, dented the lower rear quarter behind the wheel, kids would stop scratching it!! That's about it for me.

having owned both(an 02 now my 05) the cr is much quieter, if thats your taste. not a pro or a con in my opinion.the frame thus the whole truck feels much stiffer, also my 05 with 4.10s has as much or more power than my 02 with 100horse injectors(02 had 3.54s). + for the o2 is its simplier operation like mechanical injectors, no worries about leaking and meltown from that.and if u put high flow fittings on, the fuel system becomes much more reliable.milage on the 2gens is better than the 600 series and up because of the third injection event, imo.if it helps i would definetly own another 2gen.but i LOVE my 05,so what im saying is u cant go wrong with either.late

ive had 2 common rails and I would own another.
the 2nd gen rigs have these problems:
vp44 injection pump sucks
carter lift pump sucks from the factory
code 53 block is some trucks from about 98-01
factory auto tranny wont hold any power adder at all
best year 2nd gen is an 02 with the 6 spd tranny hands down
