From: somewhere in northwestern ohio....Mansfield, Oh
On my 95 motor home with a 7.3 and I went with the Banks , they had a transmission kit that I put on at the same time . It has been a great kit and I have had little trouble with it over the years . Most of the kit was first class except the air cleaner and intake hose set up that was junk . On a Econoline 350 van it is not a job for the weak but it was all that was out their back then . I spent hours installing it and lost track of how many times I went from under the hood to inside the cab to laying underneath the thing . I purchased the motor home drove it home and was leaving for Glacier Park in 3 weeks but after the drive home I knew it would never make it towing my jeep in the mountains . I ordered from banks and had it in a week and spent the next two weeks cussing at it in my spare time . My regular job at the time was a heavy hole mechanic at Ford Econoline plant in Lorain Ohio and I could do a complete engine change in 4 hours there . Banks did a amazing job of engineering to get the whole mess under the motor cover A truck would be a lot easer in many ways . Economy went up , power went up and in all it was a win win situation .

Banks kit is about $2700
ATS kit is about $2100
Hypermax is about $1650
You don't want to much boost on a 6.9 or 7.3 IDI. I wouldn't go over 10. They were built to suck, put a turbo on then they will Blow

Smoke colour....
Pretty typical colours here...
If it is black pulling a load, he has the IP turned up too much.
White is mostly coolant leak or could even be not enough fuel. IP could be the wrong pump, or turned down for some reason to cause white smoke and no coolant leak (in the block - IE head gasket or worse)
Blue is oil is being burned, or getting past the rings.
These old IDI diesels have issues with wear on the #7 and #8 cylinders and I would not be surprised if there is a huge ridge worn in the top of the cylinders. They are the farthest from the oil during startup and seem to always be worn in my experience (with old IDIs).
I only am asking cause your initial question was he said it smokes bad when pulling...

Been there done that with a Banks turbo'd 6.9. The power was adequate unloaded but with a load the power just was'nt there. My 6.9 got the Banks turbo just after it was purchased new. At 112k miles the headgaskets started to leak oil and the clutch needed to be replaced. No way was I going drop any money back into the idi. So for the price of a turbo ready idi (capable of reliably making more than 8-10 lbs of boost) I found a 94 12v and did the conversion and never looked back. Lots more power and better fuel economy. After I parted out the donor truck and sold the 6.9 the whole conversion cost under 6500.00.
Thats my 2 cents

On the tach, you'll need an instrument cluster from an '85 or newer. You'll also have to change out the housing the IP bolts to. That's where the tach sensor is located. Depending on the year of your truck it may have the wires for the tach sensor in the harness, if not it's just two wires. I've got an '84 and I added the tach to it.
