not sure what to do..
Well after about a year and a half away from the deisel scene, I am thinking of getting back into it with another Cummins. I got away because I had a very long daily commute (roughly 90 miles round trip) and I had no beater to take up the slack from the high fuel cost. Now I have a lot better of a job, close to home and a beater, but I can't decide what to do with these fuel prices on a constant rise......Anyone else in the same boat as me? I try and talk myself out of it but I miss my truck so bad, and it would be fun to start a new project truck...I am also the victim of many interest including turboes cars, which doesnt help in the decision making process. If there are people with a similiar predicament what factors helped you decide in your decision.
So far for me the fact that it wont be my dailey driver is steering me towards the purchase of another truck...

So...do you still have the truck in your sig?
I'm not driving mine much anymore, with $3.85/gal diesel, and 3.05 gas, my 30+ mpg Accord is used (over) 90% of the time. It's not a truck, but it's quite nice to drive with a good 5-speed, and it's quite a bit more agile around town. I'm having to make future decisions about my truck soon as well...

jetta's get great fuel economy and all and are pretty reliable, but lets say you buy a diesel jetta for 4000 how much are you really gonna save, versus just buying diesel for your truck ,obviously if you only drive the jetta your fuel bill will much cut down a lot and you will save money but how long before you save the 4000 you paid for the jetta? exactly why im only spending 150 on my beater and its got a rebuilt motor and its got a 5spd ,2wd no options truck dirt cheap 30mpg double what im getting right now so and im gonna park my truck for atleast 4 days if not 5 out of the week to save money. also, i'll recoup the cost of my truck in the first 3 weeks i own it. cause 150 is two weeks of driving to and from work 30 miles a day 5 days a week. so you gotta factor that into the price of something when considering buying a commuter car or truck.

I no longer have the truck in my sig...i miss it dearly, for my beater I was given a 1991 toyota corolla which was bought new by my grandmother and garage kept, it only has 120k on it and gets nearly 40 mpg, that it the only reason i can justify buying a truck again, i wont be driving the truck daily, its a hard decision to make when being unsure where exactly the price of fuel will go. as far as the jetta's go im not really into the diesel cars, i would rather get something like a 350z or something like that....i dont know...it doesnt help that i am a indecisive person already haha

I have a Jetta TDI 46 to 48 mpg. I drive 500 miles just for work and will add another 50 to 100 during the week. Weekends in my truck 100 to 400 miles. I'm spending way too much time on the road.

I made a simple calculation with new vehicles up to model '07 (the '08 use too much fuel)
New CTD 37,000, new gas 32,000
100,000 miles in 4 years
Gas 14mpg = 7150 gallons @ $ 3.00/gal = $ 21,450 cost
Diesel 21mpg = 4770 gallons @ $ 3/50/gal = $ 16,695 cost
Cost or running gas $ 53,450
Cost of running diesel $ 53,569
Looks like they are pretty much even but...
Resale gas $ 12,000
Resale Diesel $ 16,000
You will be ahead if you count in the resale figure and/or do more than 1000,000 miles in 4 years.

Thats pretty interesting, I dont think i would ever buy a gasser, i would rather just ride my bike or drive a car...diesel, if you are wanting or getting a truck, just seems the smarter choice, not to mention they are just so easy to get power out of and more efficient, and last longer..well I have made thee decision to get a trcuk, may cost me more money, but I just miss my old one to much and it was by far my favorite vehicle i have owned....soo as soon as i find what i want i will be purchasing..
