Dodge is already using a Benz diesel in the Sprinter, but their contract with CUmmins for the Rams is good until at least 2007, with a possibility of it being extended beyond that. Mercedes Benz is owned by Daimler Chrysler, so when CUmmins no longer supplies the powerplant for Rams, it would an obvious choice. As far as I know though, nothing has gotten past specualtion.

I can't imagine why they would, if the D-C/Cummins relationship ended, I suspect that Ford would drop Navistar like a bad habit. Dodge's ability to compete with Ford (in my humble opinion) is due LARGELY to the Cummins engine that they offer. If Dodge swapped the Cummins for a MB diesel, and Ford picked up the Cummins........
I'm sure that there are some hardcore Dodge loyalists out there, but if that were to happen Ford would be untouchable.

Mercedes
We've got the Mercedes engines in our new fleet. Freightliner FL80's with Mercedes OM-906 inline 6. So far easy to maintain, but I find a severe lack of power compaired to even the previous fleet of Cat's 3126. There's no GET-UP-AND-GO even after the turbo spools. I haven't checked the print out specs yet to see if they have the same gear ratio's which would make a difference.
An YES, I realize I'm talkin' a different class of truck but if these engines are any indication of what to expect in a 1500-3500 series engine, I don't think I'ld want it.
Oil and fuel filters are very easy to change. Check out the open- hood picture in this url and you can see the filter housings.

P.S. While I was internet searchin' I came across this site about Mercedes diesels and BIO-FUELS. I know there's a post here somewhere about BIO-FUELS.

Ford put the hurt on Firestone. They may not have many alternatives at the moment, but when one arrizes, they may be able to coerce or even ignore Navistar.
