A few lifetimes ago when I worked in Swaziland, we had a whole slew of 6 cyl Ford industrial diesel engines driving water pumps. There was zero electrics on any of the engines and we would pull start them using about 6 guys with a rope over their shoulders. The engines were fitted with decompressors to help with the initial rotation.
Most times this worked OK, but if the decompressor was thrown at the wrong time and the engine kicked back, there were 6 guys flat on their backs.
Have hand propped a few 600 hp radial aircraft engines too.
