The New 2010 DD15
Yesterday, I got to test drive and look at this new engine from Detroit that is taking the place of the Series 60. Almost as quiet or quiet as the 6.7 ISB. Uses common rail fuel injection and a new turbo setup from Holset that uses turbo compounding technology that attaches to the drivetrain via a fluid coupling device for 50 more horse.
Everything about this engine is different than the Series 60. This will be the first engine in a lineup that will eventually replace the 4000 and MB900. Almost 90% of the parts to the 3 engines will be interchangeable.
Here is a pic of the turbo compounding setup to scavenge extra lost exhaust gas after it leaves the turbo.
As you can see in the picture, the compoud setup attaches via the rear gear train. Exhaust from the 1st turbine enters the inlet of the the comound turbo and exits the horn to the exhaust pipe.
