Need help with a posible Cummins transplant.

My dad has a 84 Chevy 4x4,1/2 ton with a 6.2. He called me tonight to say that his tranie went out and he is trying to decide weather or not to spend the money on the truck and put a rebuilt one in it. Its gona cost him around $1300 to do it. The truck has around 250,000 miles on it and he dont wana put a tranie in a truck that may end up dead soon. He is the original owner and the truck is running perfectly yet but at that age and miles its anyones guess how many more miles it has left in it. I told him if his 6.2 dies we will just put a 12 valve in it or posibly a 4bt. He has no need for the power of the 6bt as his 6.2 serves him fine. I dont know for sure but I was thinking a 4bt would posibly bolt up to his factory tranie seeing as they are bolted to a GM tranie in the bread trucks. What I am looking for is some ideas on how feasable this is and if anyone knows what it would take to make the 4bt put out abought the same power as his stock 6.2. What are good ruinning 4bts worth? what is nesasary to do the swap? There is gona have to be a financial advantage for him to do the swap verses just putting in a new 6.2 so this all may be for nothing if he decides its to much work. That and he realy dont put many miles on the truck a year so it may live for anouther 10 years,,, who knows.

No input at all?? I know some one on here has to have put a cummins in an older Chevy. I figured some one would at least know if the 4bt would bolt up to his factory tranie.

You should be able to find a 4bt with a chevy adaptor for anywhere from 1200-2000 on ebay. They put out more power Im sure, especially once you turn a screw and play with it a little. Im not sure how well 1/2 ton suspension would hold up though. check out www.4btswaps.com for some GREAT info on the subject.

Now I'm a self confessed "Chevy" guy but I can't believe just how bad the 87 up to 2000 or 02 4X4 truck was and I never read or heard about it. I think the only good part about it was the interior on the top of the line truck. Why would you waste a perfectly good motor on a Chevy truck?

i know a couple guys here that have done 6bts in their chevys. They all 1 tons though. makes a sweet ride.

This is a friends (now deceased) 6BT cummins crew cab dually. A VE pumped engine was used with a snot rodded pump. It really could put the duals sideways on pavement

this is the replacement 6BT cummins powered shorty I forget what year motor it is..... Dodge trannys were used in both trucks. The Red dually was a NV4500 and the Black shorty is a 4 speed auto.

BTW the shorty was SFA with a D60 front and D70 rear from the same donor truck the engine came from

I loved that red one {RIP}.............the shorty's ok but its no crewcab dually

and the 4BTs was bolted to TH400 in the P30 bread van retrofits with a Cummins adapter. part #..........ok I can't find the part # off hand.

But this is what the P30 flywheel housing and modifyed flywheel to accept the torque converter looked like. I called Cummins last year about that flywheel houseing. and it is a Cummins part and it is still availiable from cummins new for around $1200. you can find it sometimes in junkyards, or theres a guy in Georgia that sells the adapter as a kit with the flywheel and starter. He's called Avant Salvage or something like that. All used stuff.

But *note* that P30 flywheel housing clocks the engine aprox 7* that was a design feature so the 4bts would actually fit in a P30 step van. So you engine mounts will have to be adujsted for that.

Sorry thats about all I can help you with

Thanks guys. I will have a look threw that Cummins swap site. As for his 1/2 ton not holding the weight of the 4bt, that wont be a problem as all the older 1/2 ton diesel Chevys where heavy 1/2's. They had 3/4 ton front springs to hold the weight of the diesel engines. I would have a real hard time beleiving a 4bt could weigh more than a 6.2. Sounds to me like he may decide against this option though as the bell housing adapter is gona cost allmost as much as the engine. Buy time he gets done he will have spent as much as just puting a rebuilt 6.2 or 6.5 in it. We will see.

Wasn't the short box a cut down first gen? I'm pretty sure thats what he was saying when I was talking to him.
