I just sold my 95 1500 with 112000 on my automatic transmission without any problems. I just ordered A new on because I'm a dodge fan, and I wanted the Cummins. You mentioned noise as a factor somewhat guiding your decision these new trucks are quite, and the new 600 is supposed to be even less noisy. I didn'r buy it based on the noise factor, but it's not a big deal to me. The other factor to consider is price you quoted 40+. My new truck is loaded except for the automatic, DVD/Nav, and "off road" tires and it came in under 36000. When looking at prices you should find out what invoice is and subtract 3%. If you're concerned about towing capacity bump up to a 3500 for about a 1000 more.

I uploaded my order sheet (pending approval). I added ther protection group to that so the MSRP totaled out to 44215. THe Invice was 39469. My price is 35788. Thats after a 500 regional rebate and the 2500 cash back that was in effect when I ordered. PM me if you need some more info. Shawn

Well I am a chevy to a Dodge, to a Chevy man. I have owned them all, and I love my 04 Crew Cab Chevy. The Allison is the most awesome tranny I have ever driven. Plus the Duramax is a beast. The ride is much better. 60% better than the Dodge, and the room is awesome. I am very happy with my choice on the switch.
This is not a bash on Dodge, because I loved it also, but I liked the Chevy better for an everyday farm, and work truck.

chevys have ALOT more front end probs than the good ol straight axle. im speaking from experience here. my dad has a 92 chev and has replaced the idler arm 4 times in the last year, and it is due to be replaced again. go with a real front end and you wont regret it

'Nuff said. Buy a CUMMINS. I am with everyone else that has ever owned a chevy and now has a dodge. I have been a chevy man my whole life but when I put 40k on the line I wanted a truck that was going to last its 40k worth and then some. They are very reliable trucks and ride just as good if not better than the chinese chevys. Just my $.02

You said you already had injector issues. Well if it starts it won't stop and probably will be just the same with the new Duramax. After warranty I had more than 20 breakdowns because of injector and fuel system issues.
Not trying to flame, but doesn't the Cummins use the same Bosch HPCR setup the duramax does? Different sized injectors, but similar design from the same supplier, no?

Steven, your clear-mindedness and insight might cause people to flame you
With the 3rd gen Dodge, there is less of as compromise to get the Cummins. You get the Cummins engine, large brakes, and a VERY capable truck.
The Chev will be more comfortable, if possibly less reliable. Since you talked about down time, well that makes the answer VERY simple: you need a Dodge with an NV5600.
The 48re is a great tranny I am sure. But Dodge has NOT made very beefy auto trannies for the Cummins. They seem to hold up OK with stock power if not worked very hard.
But if you WORK your truck or want to up the power, the 6-speed is the way to go.
Yes, it sucks having to row gears in traffic (been there MANY times). But the 6-speed makes up for it in the long haul (pun intended). A new auto is $4k or so. A new clutch is only a grand.
Failures of the NV5600 are VERY rare.
If you absolutely HAVE to have an auto, then I think the 48re will meet your needs. For the convenience, you give up fuel economy and towing performance. It's all about what's important to YOU. If you want the best of all worlds (and are willing to pay for it), get a performance aftermarket auto trans from DTT or ATS or someone like them. Then you can have your cake and eat it too.
The Allison is a great auto trans. But it's not infallible. The DM is a pretty decent combo.
I would much prefer the Gm products over any Ford. Fortunately, there's Dodge, so I don't have to go with a GM.
If Dodge would JUST offer a REAL crew cab, their sales would reflect that wisdom. The CTD is already making HUGE gains in market share, and soon Ford will be VERY nervous in the HD truck segment.
Don't put too much stock in the towing ratings. A lot of the time, the Dodge has lower ratings because it is a MUCH heavier truck (more steel). So if both are 8800GVW trucks, but one weighs 800 pounds more, that comes out of your GVW.
The DM/Alli is nice truck. Great ride and interior. But there's more to a truck than that.
