International Truck and Engine Corp. offered the first look at its new International brand big bore diesel engine at the Mid-America Trucking Show.
The new line of big bore diesels will provide greater choice to owners and operators of Class 8 highway tractors and severe service trucks. The fully emissions compliant engine, in the 11- to 13-liter range, is projected to debut in International Class 8 vehicles in the fall of 2007.
"With this introduction, Class 8 customers gain a valuable alternative from an integrated truck and engine company," said Jack Allen, president, International Engine Group. "It will be specifically engineered to integrate leading diesel technologies with cab, chassis and systems innovations, all backed by the industry’s largest dealer, service and parts network."
Allen stressed that the new engine is a "true big bore platform," a full step up in size and power from International’s leading mid-range diesels.
"The International big bore powertrain will command attention and respect as we deliver a new choice for Class 8 customers that meets their demands for fuel economy, reliability, uptime, durability, robust performance and an exceptional driver experience."
Some key features of the big bore diesel include:
-- Performance-driven direct injection high-pressure common rail electronic fuel system capable of multiple injection events.
-- Durable single overhead cam actuated with four-valves/cylinder and roller rocker arms.
-- Compacted Graphite Iron cylinder block for high strength and low weight.
-- Rugged gear-driven air compressor and power steering pump.
-- Rear gear train and pad mounted accessories designed for low noise.

Sounds like IH is finally going to try to catch up to Det, Cat, and Cummins. They have been very successful with theirs for 15+ years now. I hope the new IH version is as good as the Det, Cat, Cummins.
I just hope they don't try to bore out the PSD to accomplish it

"The secret to MAN's D2066 – using its full title – is probably the fact that it uses 25% fewer components than equivalent engines, thus reducing frictional forces, component wear and the company says that expected normal engine life is 1.5 million km. In addition to this, new common rail injection technology coupled with a compressed graphite iron block has enabled the engineers to run the engine with a compression ration of 19.0 to one. The new engine design and operating characteristics mean that the engine has completely flat power and torque curves. There have been reports that Cummins may not supply a Euro 4 engine to the European market due to uneconomic volumes. In our opinion, if this is really the case, ERF/Cummins fans won't have to look any further than the MAN D20 engine for a replacement that equals if not betters the ISMe's much loved traits."
