General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Nice truck - looks nice and simple, which is how I prefer 'em.

That D-max is a great engine and is proving itself well.

What's that weird emblem on the front grille??

Nice looking truck though....even though it's a Chevy and sounded like a pretty good deal to boot.

and Quote from 96 12V

"That D-max is a great engine and is proving itself well"

Ditto on that comment.

Now if only ford could figure it out

What will a oil analysis tell me about the engine in the used truck? I have never done one before but I always hear them being talked about on here.

when i was at the shop i worked most of the oil work we had sent off was more of a here you are now and then in a year they would tell you your levels then. one test , unless you have antifreeze or some else in their present, wouldn't tell you alot. at least that was my experience.

It'll tell you what levels of different materials are in your oil. Lets say hypothetically that the levels of metal "X" are high. This can mean that you've got a bearing wearing prematurely. There are lots of potentials as to what a oil analysis can tell you.

Hope this helps

Oil analysis will indicate many things besides coolant dilution and even one or two wear metals. The ones I'm familiar with often list at least a dozen wear metals, ideally give viscosity of the used oil at 40 & 100*C and fuel dilution as well (leaking injector.) There are some tricks to getting a good oil sample results built up. First, obtain a base-stock sample, meaning if you use Rotella 15w-40, take a sample bottle of the new oil and keep it for sending with the used oil. This means you probalby shouldn't start sampling until you've done one oil change. You're more than welcome to send in the sample from the first change, but unless you know exactly what the oil is that's in there, you'll get skewed results.

Secondly, sample several changes, and keep the results in an excel spreadsheet. The real benefit of sampling is to check for trends - not first time results. I had a co-worker years ago with a '99 Ranger he purchased new. Since day one had found he had to add about a pint of coolant to this overflow tank on a monthly basis. Coolant dilution did not show up until 17k miles, although he had mentioned the problem to the Ford dealer, who basically laughed it off. When he brought in the results, they agreed something was wrong, but wanted him to wait longer until "something failed" or just before his warrenty was up. Instead, my co-worker past away suddenly, and his truck was sold, so someone got stuck with this problem that was never resolved.
